DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Volunteers turned out this week in Des Moines to build kits to help boost the reading skills of kids. United Way of Central Iowa hosted Literacy Solstice on Thursday. All day, volunteers from around central Iowa created 1,000 literacy kits that each includes a book and activities to reinforce literacy skills. OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An inaugural ceremony will take place next week for Douglas County's Veterans Treatment Court. The special court is just for veterans, similar to drug courts especially for non-violent, first-time offenders better served by treatment than jail. ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Inspectors in New York state have begun their annual safety check of amusement rides as the summer gets under way. The state Department of Labor said Friday that its field teams inspect all amusement park rides at least once a year. The department also checks rides at traveling carnivals each time they set up in a new location. WATERFORD, N.Y. (AP) — The GlassBarge is making its way west along the Erie Canal to commemorate the 150th anniversary of glassmaking in upstate New York. The 80-foot-long barge is outfitted with electric glassblowing equipment. It is offering free demonstrations in more than 30 canal side communities. SALEM, N.H. (AP) — A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the prosecution of whoever killed a peregrine falcon in Salem. New Hampshire Fish and Game, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Salem Police are investigating the bird's death. It was found May 5 at a home in Salem, and officials say it died of a single gunshot wound from a small caliber firearm. Health Minister Amir Aman confirms to The Associated Press that the person died in a hospital after the attack.
