Cal falls short in upset bid against No. 10 Washington State
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State quarterback Gardner Minshew II found Easop Winston Jr. for a 10-yard touchdown with 32 seconds left to beat Cal 19-13 in a game that seemingly neither team wanted to win.
Cal appeared to be poised to take a late lead. With the score tied 13-13 in the closing eight minutes, the Bears had a first-and-10 from the Washington State 12-yard line.
Instead of playing it cautiously, nursing the clock with running plays and even potentially settling for a go-ahead field goal, the Bears called for a passing play with run-first backup quarterback Brandon McIlwain.
He promptly overthrew Patrick Laird and was intercepted in the end zone by Skyler Thomas, but Washington State quickly repaid the favor.
