Fire erupts at Oakland homeless encampment
A fire broke out at a homeless encampment in Oakland on Friday, authorities said.
The Oakland Fire Department responded to the blaze around 12:30 p.m., Capt. Chris Foley said, at a homeless camp on East 12th Street, between 22nd and 23rd avenues.
Firefighters got the blaze under control around 1:15 p.m., Foley said, and did not report any injuries. Between 15 and 20 living spaces were affected, but Foley did not have an estimate of how many people were displaced.
The Red Cross will be responding to help those needing shelter, officials said.
A similar fire broke out at the site, called “The Village”, on Sept. 11 and displaced multiple people.
