Falcons on threatened species list find home atop news tower
ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — A pair of Peregrine falcons has found an unusual new home — atop a Northern Illinois news tower.
The Rockford Register Star reports that the falcons have nested on the eighth floor of the paper's news tower in Rockford. The female bird has laid four eggs but they are not all expected to hatch.
Peregrine falcons were nearly wiped out in the state in the 1950s from widespread pesticide use. Thanks to conservation efforts, the birds are no longer listed as endangered. But they are still considered a threatened species.
The newspaper has set up a livestream webcam near the nest.
