Student surge at maritime academy sparks housing expansion
BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. (AP) — The Massachusetts Maritime Academy is growing: Enrollment has risen more than 60 percent over the past decade and the 482 students in the class of 2020 make it the largest in the school's history.
It is a trend most U.S. colleges would love to have, but it does force MMA to consider where to put the expanding student body. Last year, the school sent out a request for proposals for properties that could house a new dormitory for 180 upperclassmen during the school year and convert into hotel-style lodging in the summer, which would be a new revenue stream for the academy.
