2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge EV: More Powerful, But Also More Expensive
Despite excellent packaging and an impressive array of safety features, the Volvo XC40 is a little less fun to drive than its spunky appearance would suggest. Dropping in an electric powertrain fixes some of the problem by providing quick, effortless acceleration, as we noted in our first spin behind the wheel of the all-electric 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge. So, what will this sprightlier, gas-free XC40 cost you?
The XC40 Recharge will start at $54,985 when it arrives in the U.S. later this year. Keep in mind you may be eligible for a federal tax credit of $7,500, as well as additional state incentives. Still, it’s a far cry from the gas-powered 2021 Volvo XC40, which starts at $34,695. The Recharge also seems more expensive than the $51,190 Tesla Model Y, until you consider that Tesla no longer qualifies for the federal tax credit; with the tax rebate, the Volvo’s price drops to $47,485.
Under the sheetmetal, the Volvo XC40 Recharge boasts an electric powertrain delivering 402 hp and 486 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels. Drivers can recharge the Recharge’s 78 kilowatt-hour battery to 80 percent capacity in as little as around 40 minutes with a DC fast charger.
The model will feature a new Android-powered infotainment system with embedded Google services such as Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play Store. Standard goodies include a 9-inch touchscreen, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, four USB-C ports, panoramic sunroof, and rear park assist.
Just because it’s an electric vehicle doesn’t mean Volvo scrimped on choices. Eight color options are available, including various shades of black, silver, grey, blue, red, white, and green. Buyers can splurge for the Advanced Package with the helpful Pilot Assist system, 360-degree camera, and wireless smartphone charging. Other options include a Climate package, Harman Kardon sound system, and energy-saving heat pump. Yes, you can still get that awesome bright orange carpet the XC40 is known for, too.
