Ken Lake makes it a double in Italy
The Italian Concept 2 Indoor rowing championships were held in Rome last weekend.
With two disciplines, the 500m sprint and the Olympic standard distance of 2,000 metres, a wide variety of race categories were contested.
With the participants’ age ranging from 15 to 76, the races produced some new record times before an enthusiastic crowd that gathered in the Italian fitness arena.
Ken Lake, representing Malta in the Over-60 category, won both the 500 sprint and 2,000m races, setting two new national records of oneminute 30.8 seconds and six minutes 57.4 seconds respectively.
Silvio Castagnone, currently the fastest Italian indoor rower, made a great fight of the race, leading for the first 500 metres only to fade towards the end to place second in a time of seven minutes 7.6 seconds.
Lake, ranked in the top 10 in most of the Concept 2 indoor rowing categories, has recently won the European indoor rowing championship in Gyor Hungary, as well as the German, Irish, and Scottish championships.
