Wembley tribute to Johan Cruyff

England fans paid tribute to Johan Cruyff at Wembley by standing and applauding in the 14th minute of Tuesday's friendly against Holland. Cruyff, who wore number 14 on the back of his shirt, scored 33 goals in 48 internationals and helped the Dutch reach the World Cup final in 1974. Cruyff died of cancer aged 68 last Thursday. Fire in UAE residential towers, five injured

Firefighters brought under control a fire that broke out at a residential tower in Ajman in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the city civil defence said. Local media said that five people were treated on the spot for injuries from the fire which broke out late at night on Monday at the Ajman One, a residential cluster of 12 towers. Fire gutted at least two towers. Residents of towers were evacuated and the cause of the fire was not immediately known. The civil defence made no mention of any casualties from the blaze. ‘Malta unclear on carcinogenic pesticide’

Malta’s position on the use of the potentially cancer-causing chemical glyphosate in pesticides is still unclear ahead of a crucial vote in May, as the European Commission seeks to extend its approval for the next 15 years. Maltese businesses are way ahead of European competitors in making the best use of social media to reach audiences, a recent EU study on ICT usage and e-commerce concluded. Italy rescues nearly 1,400 migrants in southern Mediterranean

Italian coast guard and navy vessels rescued nearly 1,400 migrants from boats and rubber dinghies in the southern Mediterranean today, officials said, indicating numbers were rising as the weather warms up. About 570 were rescued by the navy and about 780 by the coast guard, according to Tweets from both branches of the military. Italian airline starts Catania-Malta flights

Private Italian airline Volotea this afternoon started trice-weekly scheduled flights between Malta and Catania. Its colourful Boeing 717 aircraft was given a watery welcome by fire-fighters when it landed at Malta airport for the first time Volotea is the first of three airlines starting operations to and from Malta International Airport this year. Kids ‘not getting the best’ of fostering services

30% fewer people depend on social benefits

The number of people who depend on social benefits for a living declined to 7,000 last year from 10,000 in 2014, according to figures issued by the National Statistics Office. The government welcomed the figures, saying the 30% decline had come in a year when Malta had record economic growth and the lowest registered unemployment. The government observed that those who receive unemployment benefits or social assistance because they are unemployed had dropped to 2,200 and to less than 490 respectively from 3,250 and 960 respectively in 2013. Five years jail for man who sexually corrupted girl, 14

A 47-year-old man has been jailed for five years after being found guilty of corrupting and engaging in sexual activities with the 14-year-old daughter of his partner. The man, who cannot be named by court order, was also found guilty of possessing indecent footage of the girl. The case dates to September 2012 when a woman and her 14-year-old daughter, as well as the two children of the accused, filed a police report and handed the police footage depicting the minor performing oral sex on the accused. The Nationalist Party warned today that it would sue the chairperson of the Broadcasting Authority unless she dropped her decision to ban reference to the Panama companies scandal in three minutes of airtime given to the party on Dissett. A 49-year-old man from Tunisia has been sentenced to two years imprisonment after a court held him responsible for causing an accident which left a woman brain damaged 16 years ago. Britain EU 'In' campaign holds 8 point lead over 'Out'

The campaign to keep Britain inside the European Union has an 8 percentage point lead over those pushing for an exit from the bloc, an opinion poll showed today. The Ipsos MORI telephone survey showed 49 percent would vote to remain in the EU at the June 23 referendum, compared to 41 percent who said they would vote to leave. The poll of 1,023 adults was conducted between March 19 and March 22, meaning it does not fully reflect any impact on voting intentions of bombings in Brussels on March 22 which killed 35 people.
