Man injured in fight

A man was injured in an argument with his neighbour at an apartment in Triq is-Sifa in Mellieħa this afternoon. His condition is not yet known. The police said the injured party was hit with a piece of wood during the fight, which took place at around 6.30pm.



Erdogan lashes out at Belgium over Brussels attacker

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan accused the Belgian authorities of being soft on militant groups and said they should account for intelligence failures in the run-up to Islamic State suicide bombings in Brussels. Erdogan said European authorities had shown themselves "incompetent" after Turkey deported one of the Brussels attackers last July but he was subsequently released. Good Friday processions are being held in several localities in Malta and Gozo this evening. The processions are held to commemorate the death of Christ before he is risen again on Easter, next Sunday. Bible scenes are being brought to life by men and women in costume who are walking behind statues representing the stages of the Lord’s passion. Senior Islamic State leader killed by US forces

US forces have killed a senior Islamic State leader, among several key members of the militant group eliminated this week, the country's Defence Secretary Ash Carter said. Mr Carter identified the senior IS leader as Haji Imam and described him as the group's finance minister. He said he was a "well-known terrorist" who had a hand in terror plots outside of Iraq and Syria. "Leaders can be replaced. However, these leaders have been around for a long time. Islamic State loses Palmyra citadel to Syrian army

Syrian soldiers recaptured the old citadel of Palmyra overlooking the city's ancient ruins today, state media and a monitoring group said, in an offensive which could open up much of eastern Syria to government forces. The recapture of Palmyra, which the Islamist militants seized in May 2015, would mark the biggest single gain for President Bashar al-Assad since Russia intervened in September and turned the tide of the five-year conflict in his favour. Maltese man detained in Libya over horse cargo dispute

A Maltese man is among those detained in Libya following a business dispute over a cargo of horses, Times of Malta has learnt. The ship was believed to be carrying some 64 horses, but a number of them died en route to Misrata port where the vessel is now anchored, according to sources. The incident happened earlier this week and since then more horses have died, according to sources. Brussels attacks: explosions as police carry out more raids

Two explosions were heard as police carried out more raids in a Brussels neighbourhood today, Belgian state media reported. One man was reported to have been detained as Belgian authorities carried out multiple operations following the terror attacks on Tuesday at Brussels airport and the Metro in which 31 people died and 270 were injured At least one suspect in the city attacks is at large, and it is unclear whether there were other accomplices. Young man charged with stealing woman's handbag

A 25-year-old man from Eritrea was remanded in custody after he was charged with stealing a handbag from a foreign national in Paceville. Yemane Teklom Zerislase denied stealing a handbag containing a €300 mobile phone, assaulting the victim and being drunk in public. Orange thieves jailed two years, sentence appealed

Two teenagers who helped themselves to oranges from a small private garden in Pembroke were sentenced to two years imprisonment after they unsuccessfully tried to break into the residence. Their lawyer appealed the sentence and the appeal is being decided this afternoon. Sameh Yousef Hassan, 18 from Palestine and Iman Abalez Mohammed, 18 from Egypt, admitted to the charges of attempted aggravated theft and causing damage to private property amounting to around €25. Hector Bruno’s miniature church which is set up at his family’s workshop in Old Theatre Street, Valletta, has this year been decorated to reflect the Seven Sorrows of Mary on the occasion of Good Friday. The church, built by Mr Bruno himself, is 5.5 metres long, 3.96 metres wide and 2.13 metres high. It is a permanent fixture at the workshop but it gets its decorations according to occasion. Man wears 'I am a thief' sign to avoid jail sentence

A 44-year-old Ohio man chose to wear a sign saying “I am a thief. I stole from Walmart” to avoid a 30-day jail sentence after stealing a 52-inch television. Charged for the theft back in December, Greg Davenport this month pleaded guilty to the theft charge. The judge gave him the option between a prison sentence of 30 days and having to wear the sign eight hours a day for 10 days in front of the shop. Missing Briton confirmed dead in Brussels terror attacks

A Briton who has been missing since the deadly terror attacks in Brussels has been confirmed dead. The family of Briton David Dixon, 53, who is originally from Hartlepool but was living in the Belgian capital, said they had received "the most terrible and devastating news". Germany arrests two suspects linked to Brussels bombers - report

German police have arrested two people they suspect are linked to the Islamist suicide bombers who killed 31 people in Brussels on Tuesday, the German newsmagazine Der Spiegel said in an unsourced report today. It said one of the men, arrested on Wednesday near Frankfurt, received two mobile phone messages shortly before the bombings that included the name of Khalid El Bakraoui, the man Belgian police say blew himself in a Brussels metro station. Hundreds gathered in Sydney today to witness a re-enactment of scenes from Jesus' crucifixion in a Christian religious performance to mark Good Friday. Actors belonging to the Wesley Mission performed a stage show before the actor playing Jesus, Brendan Paul, carried a cross through the Sydney streets. Easter celebrations for Christians are expected to continue all weekend, culminating in traditional Easter Sunday services.

A dog walked in on the field during the first half of a Brazilian football match between Oeste and Capivariano. The São Paulo teams interrupted the game as an Oeste player started chasing the dog across the field before getting snapped at by the dog. Soon after Capivariano star Alex scooped up the dog and handed it over to a stadium employee. The match continued once the dog was out the field and ended with a win for Capivariano.

A Filipino devotee has been nailed to the cross for the 30th time in an Easter ritual - and offered his sacrifice for peace in Belgium and other countries targeted by Islamic extremists. Ruben Enaje and several other men screamed in pain as they were nailed to wooden crosses in iPampanga province north of Manila in a re-enactment of Jesus Christ's death. Florida police in Indian River County responded to a fiery three-vehicle accident where a woman is trapped in her car. The crash involved the car, a septic tanker truck and a flatbed garbage truck. A female deputy used a fire extinguisher but the car continued to burn. She and another officer finally pulled the woman out before she was airlifted to a hospital. The deputy was treated for burns to her hand.

A man in a white pickup truck led police on a high-speed chase though the East Valley near Phoenix, Arizona yesterday, before rolling over in the truck on Interstate 10. Local news showed video of the suspect attempting to carjack a motorcyclist, pulling him off of his bike and unsuccessfully fighting him before jumping back in the truck and speeding off.
