Fortina 'rewarded' after breaching permit conditions, Graffitti says

Times of Malta

The Environment and Resources Authority rewarded Fortina's "abusive behaviour" to start works on their catamaran pontoon in Balluta last Saturday by secretively changing the permit conditions, effectively allowing it to carry out works during the swimming season, Graffitti said on Friday. In a statement, the NGO said this was a decision “taken by stealth”. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson acted "unwisely" over funding arrangements for a lavish makeover of his Downing Street flat, but was not guilty of any impropriety, his ethics advisor concluded Friday. The finding by Christopher Geidt, the UK government's newly appointed adviser on ministerial standards, does not entirely lift the cloud over the "wallpapergate" affair with several other probes still under way. It is also likely to fuel questions about why civil servants, at Johnson's direction... Читать дальше...

Losing the tax advantage

Times of Malta

At a European Union level, the subject of tax harmonisation has been mentioned a number of times. Rightly so, Malta, together with other countries, has resisted the notion of tax harmonisation across the whole of the EU for two main reasons. First, tax is a subject of national competence and not EU competence. Second, our tax rules had been agreed at the time of the country’s accession to the EU and we cannot now be expected to give them up for the sake of harmonisation. However, the matter has now taken a different twist. Читать дальше...
