Two dead as synagogue stands collapse near Jerusalem

Updated Two people were killed and dozens injured Sunday when grandstand seating collapsed at a synagogue in the Israeli settlement of Givat Zeev in the occupied West Bank, Israeli authorities said. The incident occurred outside Jerusalem "as hundreds were congregated" for the Jewish Shavuot feast, a Magen David Adom emergency services spokesman told Israeli channel Kan. Malta’s Destiny Chukunyere will not be taking part in the opening of the Eurovision song contest as a COVID-19 precaution. Sunday's "Turquoise carpet" event will launch the glitzy week-long Eurovision competition in Rotterdam, which was cancelled last year and scaled-down this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Although all members of the Maltese delegation have tested negative, a member of the Icelandic delegation, staying at the same hotel as Malta, tested positive for the virus. Motorcyclist injured in Żebbuġ accident

A motorcyclist was grievously injured on Sunday in a traffic accident in Żebbuġ. The police said the accident happened in Triq is-Siġġiewi at 11.30am. The victim, who is 32 and lives in Iklin, was riding a Honda that was involved in a collision with a Nissan March that was being driven by a 26-year-old woman from Victoria. He was given first aid by a medical team on site and then transferred to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance. The police are investigating.

Seven Indonesians drowned after an overloaded boat capsized because of tourists attempting a selfie in a reservoir on Java island, police said Sunday. The accident happened when all 20 passengers suddenly moved to the one side of the vessel to take a group photo on Saturday in the Boyolali regency, said Central Java police chief Ahmad Lutfi. Two new COVID-19 cases, 21 recoveries

New COVID-19 cases remained in single digits for the sixth consecutive day on Sunday, with two new cases being reported. Twenty-one patients recovered, bringing the total number of active cases in the country down to 158. No deaths were reported for the ninth consecutive day. Ball, accompanied by Brigadier-General Thilson and his staff, welcomed to the Maltese islands a royal guest, the 29-year-old Prince Louis Charles d’Orléans, Count de Beaujolais. He was a son of the late Duke of Orléans, Louis Philippe Joseph (1747-93) and his consort Louise Marie Adèlaide de Bourbon (1753-1821). Child killed in house collapse in northern England

One child died and four adults were injured early on Sunday after two houses collapsed in a suspected gas explosion in northwest England, police said. Police in the county of Lancashire said they were called to the row of terraced houses at 2.40am (0140 GMT) where they evacuated other residents and set up a safety cordon.
