Times of Malta

People over 30 will be able to sign up for the COVID-19 vaccine from Tuesday, Health Minister Chris Fearne has announced, as healthcare professionals continue to speed through the roll-out of the jab.  Speaking during Workers' Day festivities, the minister said that those who are over 30 will be able to register online or via SMS, a process introduced some weeks ago when those over 50s started being offered the jab.  The announcement for the over 30s comes just over a week after those in their 40s became eligible for the vaccine. From the bench: Visitation rights − at the child’s discretion?

Times of Malta

Being in default of paying maintenance following a court order or after signing a contract may result in prison. Yet do visitation rights carry the same weight as a maintenance order does? Failure to pay maintenance within 15 days from the day on which such maintenance is due is a contravention against public order; similarly is the refusal by a child’s custodian (without just cause) to give the other parent access to the child when ordered by a court or bound by a contract.  The non-observation... Watch: Dolphins swim close to Manoel Island shore in rare sight

Times of Malta

A small pod of dolphins was spotted in Marsamxett Harbour, close to the shore of Manoel Island, on Saturday evening.  While dolphins are a common presence in Maltese waters, it is rarer for them to be seen swimming so close to shore, as at least three were in this footage sent to Times of Malta. Sightings have increased over the last year, with the quieter waters brought about by a reduction in marine traffic due to the COVID-19 pandemic one likely explanation.  "Typically cetaceans stay away... Belgian police fire water cannon to clear anti-lockdown party

Times of Malta

Belgian police fired water cannon and tear gas as they moved in Saturday to clear a crowd of several hundred gathered in a park to protest anti-virus lockdown rules.  The defiant, mainly young crowd had assembled for the so-called "Boum 2" protest, organised online, as a follow up to an action that was broken up last month. Prime Minister Alexander de Croo had urged the crowds to stay away, and hundreds of officers were deployed before the order to clear the park was given AFP reporters in the Bois de la Cambre... Valtteri Bottas took pole position for the Portuguese Grand Prix with seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton completing a Mercedes front-row lockout in qualifying on Saturday. Hamilton’s pursuit of a 100th pole at the track where last year he notched up his record 92nd win was delayed when Bottas earned the 17th of his career. “It’s a good feeling to be on pole,” said Bottas. He added: “Feels like it’s been a while. It’s been a weak point for me in the first two races. The team have been working... Читать дальше...

Times of Malta

A tax official suspended for issuing irregular documents to a football club had been caught doing the exact same thing last year.  Times of Malta reported two weeks ago that a tax official has been suspended and an internal probe launched after the authorities learnt he had issued Birkirkara FC with a tax arrears repayment plan that was not in conformity with the rules. The matter raised eyebrows as the documents provided to the club were submitted as part of Birkirkara FC’s application to be... Читать дальше...

Manchester City are within touching distance of the Premier League title after Sergio Aguero and Ferran Torres sealed a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace on Saturday. Pep Guardiola’s side sit 13 points clear at the top and will be crowned champions if second-placed Manchester United lose against Liverpool on Sunday. Making the transition from woman to mother

Times of Malta

No matter how well-informed a woman is about birth, nothing can truly prepare her for that moment, so natural and yet so miraculous, when her life is transformed as she gives life to another human being. “There is no switch that turns you from a woman to a mother. It is a transitional phase. You don’t become a mother the second you give birth… At every stage of your child’s life you need to be a different mother,” says veteran midwife and mother-of-two Claire Zerafa. VR ER: technology is helping UK medical students learn safely

Times of Malta

The rural county of Somerset in southwest England is best known for its cider, and seems an unlikely setting for cutting-edge technological innovation. But, owing to teaching disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic, medical students at Musgrove Park Hospital in the main town of Taunton are tapping in to virtual reality technology to help them in their studies. Clutching hand-held controllers and immersed in large headsets, the students are plunged into a maelstrom of virtual intensive care wards. Читать дальше...

Portugal eases virus measures and reopens its border with Spain

Times of Malta

Portugal reopened its land border with Spain on Saturday and began the final stage of its programme to ease COVID-19 restrictions. The country was hit hard at the start of the year by a wave that saw 300 coronavirus deaths a day overwhelm hospitals. Earlier in the week Prime Minister Antonio Costa announced the... Читать дальше...

Times of Malta

Inter are on the brink of the Serie A title which they could claim for the first time in over a decade this weekend while Juventus scramble for a Champions League spot. All four lanes of traffic running through the Kirkop tunnels will reopen to vehicles come Monday morning, as Infrastructure Malta enters the final phase of a roadworks project in the area. Motorists commuting through the area have complained about the pace of works and say lane closures due to the works have caused gridlock during peak traffic hours. Their concerns were partly allayed by Infrastructure Malta on Saturday, with the roads agency saying that it would be completing most works involving the Kirkop tunnel this weekend. Man. Utd aim to keep Man. City title celebrations on ice

Times of Malta

Manchester City could wrap up a third Premier League title in four seasons on Sunday, but Manchester United can keep their local rivals waiting by inflicting further damage on Liverpool’s hopes of a return to the Champions League next season.
