New Covid-19 deaths surged past 4,000 for the first time in India on Saturday in one of the world's worst outbreaks, as EU pressure mounted on Washington to end vaccine export limits and offer a concrete plan to lift patents. "I call very clearly on the United States to put an end to export bans not only on vaccines but on vaccine ingredients, which prevent production," Macron told reporters at an EU summit in Porto. Malta helped Libya identify suspected Maltese trafficker - sources

A Maltese man arrested in Libya had been flagged for suspected criminal activity by the local authorities several months ago.  Jesmond Vella, 45, known as Il-Bulgaru, was arrested in the western coastal city of Zuwarah on suspicion of human smuggling and drug trafficking on April 5. Teenager seriously injured in Binġemma fall

A 17-year old man was seriously injured on Saturday after falling from a height in Binġemma valley, in the limits of Mġarr. The young man, a Birkirkara resident, was assisted by the Civil Protection Department and medical personnel on site after the incident at around 11.30am.  He was then transferred to Mater Dei Hospital for further treatment.  Police investigations are ongoing.

Six new COVID-19 cases and no deaths reported

The number of new COVID-19 cases reported in Malta continued to hit months-long lows on Saturday, when just six new virus cases were reported. No patients died overnight, meaning the death toll remained stable at 417.
