Times of Malta

US e-commerce giant Amazon announced on Friday that it will create more than 10,000 new jobs in Britain, a day after a US hiring spree as online shopping booms during the pandemic. The expansion, equivalent to one-fifth of its UK workforce, will take its total staff in the country to more than 55,000 by the end of this year. The announcement came one day after Amazon revealed plans to add 75,000 jobs in the United States and Canada. “We’re creating thousands of good jobs across the UK from a diverse... Читать дальше...

Times of Malta

Two of the four speed cameras planned for the Coast Road have been installed, the Local Enforcement System Agency (LESA) said.  The other two will be installed at a later date. Today's front pages - May 14, 2021

Times of Malta

These are the leading stories in local newspapers this Friday. Times of Malta leads with news that health authorities have decided that village feast celebrations will not be allowed this summer, for a second consecutive year.  The newspaper also gives prominence to escalating violence in the Middle East, with Israel ordering troops to mobilise to quell riots on two fronts.  The Malta Independent dedicates its entire front cover to debate about decriminalising abortion, sparked by a private members' bill presented by MP Marlene Farrugia. ‘May I talk to you please?’ - Mark Xuereb

Times of Malta

I walk – PPE-clad – into a medical ward to see a patient. A seasoned manager I’ve known for years approaches me: “Jimporta nkellmek naqra please?” (“May I talk to you please?”). Without hesitation, I usher her into an office. She bursts out into tears and I haven’t even shut the door yet. COVID-19 doesn’t only hurt our patients and loved ones. It also hurts our indefatigable staff. Haggard and clearly under pressure, the manager opens up. It’s not only COVID-19 but this is the cherry on the cake. Читать дальше...

Compensating air spaces – Robert Musumeci

Times of Malta

Two-storey buildings located outside urban conservation areas (many of which were built in the 1970s to 1980s era) may be easily pulled down and replaced by multi-storey apartments following a simple planning application. This is possible because the local plans published in 2006 were specifically designed to promote this state of play. In that same epoch, another policy was introduced so that where three allowable floors were allowed, a penthouse floor could also be permitted ‘over and above’. Читать дальше...

Cannabis reform: caution is needed – Marisa Xuereb

Times of Malta

As any business is wholly aware, change can be difficult and success is all about how that change is carried out. The recent White Paper on the legalisation of recreational cannabis spurred an extensive discussion and employers wanted to know how this reform would affect them and how they should navigate the circumstances. The Malta Chamber believes that the logical approach towards recreational cannabis should begin with decriminalising personal use while prioritising public health. Quick win solutions are unnecessary risks ... Читать дальше...

‘No village feasts’ this summer

Times of Malta

The health authorities have decided that the celebration of religious feasts will not be permitted this summer for the second consecutive year due to the COVID pandemic. The government is due to meet Church authorities to discuss the matter but will insist that, along with other mass events, village feasts are not yet viable in the present situation, sources have told Times of Malta. Health Minister Chris Fearne last week already hinted this would be the case, even as he unveiled the plan to ease... Читать дальше...

An inspirational novelty in drug policy - José Ramos-Horta

Times of Malta

Cannabis is the most widely used illegal substance around the world, accounting for an estimated 192 million consumers out of the 269 million people reported to have used drugs in 2018. In Malta, this trend proves true as well, with a prevalence of cannabis use of 4.3 per cent among adults. These figures, in Malta and abroad, are reported by governments and based on data of people arrested or on those who sought emergency care and are conservative and partial as people with unreported occasional... Eikon – the Centre for Liturgical Arts of the Diocese of Gozo – is working on two mosaic icons, one of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the other of the Blessed Mother as Star of the Sea (Stella Maris).  The icons were commissioned by Fr Alfredo Hernandez, rector of St Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Florida, the US. Letters to the editor - May 14, 2021

Times of Malta

Missing the point about embryos Christopher Barbara (May 6) completely misses the point made by Ivan Padovani’s note which highlighted the incontestable fact that every human adult was at one point a zygote. Whether we should casually call the early embryo a “miniature baby” or not, no biologist could, or would, deny that she was a zygote at the earliest instant of her life. I was once a zygote, even you, the reader of this letter was once a zygote. The argument for abortion is not a scientific... Читать дальше...

Liverpool beat Man. United to boost chances of Champions League return

Times of Malta

Liverpool kept their chances of a place in next season’s Champions League in their own hands with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Thursday. Jurgen Klopp’s men still need to win their remaining three games to guarantee a place in the Premier League’s top four, but cleared the biggest hurdle in their path with a first victory away to United since 2014. Roberto Firmino scored twice either side of half-time after Diogo Jota cancelled out Bruno Fernandes’s early opener for the home side. Читать дальше...

Haaland, Sancho score two each as Dortmund win German Cup final

Times of Malta

Jadon Sancho and Erling Braut Haaland both netted twice Thursday as Borussia Dortmund won the German Cup with an emphatic 4-1 win over RB Leipzig to spoil Julian Nagelsmann’s hopes of leaving with a title. Dortmund turned on the style at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, converting all of their three first-half shots on target to sweep Leipzig aside as Sancho netted twice either side of a superb Haaland goal. Spain midfielder Dani Olmo pulled a goal back for Leipzig, before Haaland grabbed his second... Читать дальше...
