SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Coast Guard has rescued 18 people from two vessels after a yacht collided with a fishing boat off the coast of San Diego. The San Diego Union-Tribune reports the collision happened shortly before 8 p.m. Friday off the coast of Imperial Beach. Authorities told the newspaper a Coast Guard helicopter and two Coast Guard boats responded to an emergency call from the yacht. SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — U.S. Rep. Chris Stewart, R-Utah, has authored several books that have made The New York Times best-seller list. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that is partly because his own campaign is buying them. Federal Election Commission filings show that the campaign committee Friends for Chris Stewart spent $3,956 on Stewart's books from July through September. BOSTON (AP) — A new state law is designed to help public schools screen students for dyslexia and help them overcome the reading disorder. Republican Gov. Charlie Baker has signed into law the bill that requires state education officials to draw up guidelines for helping school districts develop screening protocols for students who show signs of dyslexia or another neurological learning disability. BRYANT, Ala. (AP) — Two people face animal cruelty charges after Alabama authorities found dogs starving on their property. WHNT-TV reports Jackson County Sheriff's Office Animal Enforcement Deputy Tony Wilbanks responded to an anonymous tip about a mistreated dog at a home near Bryant. Wilbanks says the caller believed the dog was a Doberman, but Wilbanks says when he saw the animal, it was so underfed and malnourished that it was basically skin over a skeleton. (AP) — Police are looking for the driver of a pickup truck they say fled after fatally running down a woman and 1-year-old girl in a crosswalk in the Los Angeles suburb of San Gabriel. Police Sgt.
