The Warriors will also be without Draymond Green, who is nursing a sore knee. Kerr said that Green did not practice Thursday, but is "feeling much better." The team is optimistic that Green will be ready to return by Sunday’s open practice. Читать дальше...

Columbia postdoctoral researchers vote to unionize

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — Some 2,000 postdoctoral researchers and associate research scientists at Columbia University have voted for representation by the United Auto Workers. The union announced the vote by the postdocs Thursday and urged Columbia "to move swiftly toward bargaining." The move comes months after the university said it would not bargain with the graduate students who voted for union representation in December 2016. Columbia administrators have argued that graduate teaching and research assistants are primarily students, not workers. Читать дальше...

Another rare fish pulled back from extinction

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

DENVER — Another rare Colorado River fish has been pulled back from the brink of extinction, wildlife officials said Thursday, the second comeback this year for a species unique to the Southwestern U.S. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recommended reclassifying the ancient and odd-looking razorback sucker from endangered to threatened, meaning it is still at risk of extinction, but the danger is no longer immediate. Hundreds of thousands of razorbacks once thrived in the Colorado River and its tributaries... Читать дальше...

No free lunch for renewables: More wind power would warm US

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — A new study out of Harvard finds that ramping up wind power in America would also dial up the nation's temperatures. The study finds overall that the U.S. would warm a few tenths of a degree if the number of turbines were increased dramatically. That's because wind mixes the normal layers of warm and cool air in a way that makes the surface toastier. As Harvard professor David Keith puts it, when it comes to energy production, "there is no free lunch." Still, the researchers and... Читать дальше...

Aid groups now using bitcoin technology

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

LONDON — In the Za’atari refugee camp in Jordan, Amar Al-Eid heads toward the checkout of the food distribution store carrying supplies for his two children. The shopkeeper raises a black box to his face and scans the Syrian refugee’s iris. The transaction goes through and a day’s rations are secured. The data technology that underpins virtual currencies like bitcoin is now also used to deliver aid more efficiently by dramatically lowering the risk of bribes and fraud by local officials — a huge, long-standing problem in the industry. Cal bracing for a big test from Arizona passing game

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

There are a number of reasons why sophomore cornerback Camryn Bynum remains on the field long after Cal practices to work on perfecting his technique and footwork. Saturday night’s game at Arizona represents two of them. The Wildcats have the most dynamic pair of receivers Cal has faced this season in 6-foot-5 Shawn Poindexter and slot Shun Brown, who have combined for 41 catches, 695 yards and five touchdowns. Playing in a fifth year of eligibility, granted because of a series of injuries, Poindexter... Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Marion "Suge" Knight was sentenced Thursday to 28 years in prison for mowing down and killing a Compton businessman in a case that completed the former rap music mogul's downfall from his heyday as one of the biggest — and most feared names in the music industry. Knight will now likely live out most, if not the rest, of his life in a California prison. He showed no emotion in court Thursday as relatives of Terry Carter, the man he killed, described their loved one as a devoted family man and peacemaker. Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Thousands of housekeepers, cooks and other workers at Marriott-affiliated hotels went on strike in San Francisco and San Jose Thursday after months of negotiations for job security, a wage increase and what unions call work overloads. About 2,500 Marriott hotel workers were picketing outside at least seven hotels in downtown San Francisco, the heart of the city's tourist area. The hotels include the Ritz-Carlton, the Palace Hotel, the W Hotel and the Marriott Marquis. Another 200 walked out in San Jose... Читать дальше...

Here today, ghosting tomorrow _ workers just disappear

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

All seemed to be going well with Randolph Rice’s new receptionist. She asked for more responsibilities and got them, and said she was happy. Then, two months into the job at Rice’s law office, she didn’t show up for work or call in sick. Rice tried to reach her, but got no response. He’d been ghosted: The receptionist ended the work relationship in much the same way many people end romantic associations, without a text, email, or call. “Phones and the internet have created less of a bond between individuals,” said Rice... LILONGWE, Malawi (AP) — Melania Trump spent Thursday in southern Africa promoting the work of a U.S. international development agency whose funding President Donald Trump has twice proposed slashing by nearly a third. Lawmakers essentially ignored those requests. ‘Studio 54’ Film Review: Disco Doc Skims the Surface Like Club Owners Skimming Profits

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The nightclub Studio 54 sought to be a disco paradise in the 1970s, a utopia made up of sex, drugs, dancing, and celebrity display. Many gay men of a certain age in Manhattan still claim to have been one of the shirtless waiters in tight shorts at Studio 54, and like so much else about that club, these claims are hard to verify. Documentarian Matt Tyrnauer (“Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood”) sits down with the two surviving co-owners of the club, Ian Schrager and Jack Dushey (the latter functioned as a silent partner)... Moscow accused in cyberattacks on investigators pursuing Russian misconduct

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

WASHINGTON — Russian intelligence officers brazenly launched cyberattacks on investigators pursuing cases of Russian malfeasance around the globe, Western officials said Thursday, offering a litany of victims including anti-doping agencies, inspectors scrutinizing the poisoning of a former spy in Britain and others examining the downing of a passenger jet in 2014. The Justice Department indicted seven Russian intelligence officers on charges of trying to hack into antidrug agencies in the United States... Читать дальше...

With any luck, A’s leave bullpenning behind

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Nine regrettable innings at Yankee Stadium, and there went the Oakland A’s season Wednesday night. It just vanished, like some sort of mirage. One game, no second chances, and have a nice winter. With a lot of soul-searching ahead. This was audition night for bullpenning — not a crazy September experiment, but center stage before a national audience. To say it was a failure wouldn’t be accurate; the Yankees held just a 2-0 lead going into the sixth inning, and if the A’s had gambled on any of their starters (Mike Fiers... Читать дальше...

Pentagon chief says Russia violation of missile treaty ’untenable’

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

BRUSSELS — Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Thursday said Russia’s deployment of nuclear-capable missiles in violation of an arms treaty is “untenable” and unless Moscow changes, the U.S. will have to match that military capability. Speaking to reporters at the close of a NATO defense ministers meeting, Mattis said the U.S. is reviewing its diplomatic and military options because of Russia’s continued violation of the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty. “Russia must return to compliance... Does ‘Venom’ Have a Post-Credits Scene?

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

“Venom” may be a comic book movie based on the Marvel Comics character, but it’s not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe which is so fond of tossing in teases for future movies after the credits of each film. While MCU films always have something extra in store after the credits roll, it’s not a guarantee with other comic book movies. So that’s the question: once the credits begin, is it safe to bail for the bathroom or do you need to stick around for a bonus post-credits scene? Read the full... Читать дальше...
