The first scene in Josh Begley’s short film makes it clear it won’t be a standard montage of helmet-rattling NFL collisions. “Concussion Protocol” opens with a close-up shot of Broncos wide receiver Bennie Fowler III, his helmet off, in the moments after he sustained a concussion. Fowler’s faraway look is apparent to viewers, who will spend over five minutes being provoked and pained rather than entertained. “I didn’t want it to be a highlight reel of hard hits because those exist, and because those are very difficult to watch,” Begley said.

After years of stagnation, the football helmet industry has welcomed some much-needed innovation. It’s been provided by Vicis, a Seattle-based company whose product debuted on the field last year and was named one of Time Magazine’s 25 best inventions of 2017. PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — SAT participation is up in Rhode Island after the test became a graduation requirement, but the percentage of students who had proficient scores in reading and math has declined. The Providence Journal reports that 95 percent of public high school juniors took the SATs this year, a 16 percent increase from the previous year. DETROIT (AP) — Ford is recalling nearly 1.5 million Focus compact cars in North America because a fuel system problem can cause the engines to stall without warning. The recall covers cars from the 2012 through 2018 model years with 2-liter four-cylinder engines. Ford says a valve in the fuel system can stick in the open position, causing too much vacuum, and an engine control computer may not detect the problem. The state Department of Natural Resources says 44-year-old Charles Cole Jr. of New Salisbury is wanted on a warrant related to thefts in Harrison County. DALLAS (AP) — Higher fuel costs slashed third-quarter profit at American Airlines by nearly half, and the company says it is responding by growing more slowly and cutting unprofitable flights. The shares are climbing in trading before Thursday's opening bell. American Airlines Group Inc. earned $341 million, down 48 percent from a year ago. FORT SCOTT, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas soldier who was killed in World War II has been laid to rest at Fort Scott National Cemetery, 74 years after his death. Army Pfc. Leslie Shankles, of Arcadia, was buried with full military honors on Wednesday at the cemetery in Bourbon County. A graveside service took place in the cemetery's committal shelter, with relatives, service members and veterans attending.
