JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas State University officials have said Dr. Eugene W. Smith, who served as president for 8 years and was named president emeritus, has died in Jonesboro after a lengthy illness. He was 88. Emerson Funeral Home Director Rick Carter said Smith died in hospice Sunday. Smith was born June 10, 1930. Mel Gibson has signed on to direct, executive produce, and co-write a remake of Sam Peckinpah’s classic Western “Wild Bunch,” a person with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap. ATLANTA (AP) — The board of a Georgia utility has voted to continue the expansion of a nuclear power plant that's years behind schedule and billions of dollars over budget. But another co-owner still needs to decide the plant's ultimate fate. The Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia's board voted unanimously Monday to continue building two new reactors at the Vogtle nuclear power plant near Waynesboro. ATLANTA (AP) — Two men have pleaded guilty to murder in the slayings of a pregnant woman and her fiance four years ago. News outlets report that 44-year-old Andre Gay and 46-year-old Richard Wilson pleaded guilty Monday in the killings of 21-year-old Briana Brooks and 23-year-old Jeonta Brown. Global stocks took small losses Monday after China reportedly pulled out of trade talks with the U.S. Industrial companies and banks suffered some of the worst declines among American stocks. Most of that is for public money the auditor says was misspent from 2013 to 2017 on personal items like shoes, watches and a chandelier. KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Kansas' troubled child welfare system was beginning to make progress after months of issues when rape allegations were made public last week involving a teen in the state's custody. A 13-year-old was allegedly raped by a young man who was also in the state's care while at an Olathe child welfare office in May.
