CHICAGO (AP) — Jon Burge, a former Chicago police commander who was linked to numerous cases involving the torture of suspects, has died in Florida. The Ruskin, Florida, funeral home handling Burge's remains confirmed his death. Burge was 70. More than 100 men, most of them black, have accused Burge and his "midnight crew" of rogue detectives of shocking, suffocating and beating them to secure confessions. The alleged torture happened from 1972 to 1991. Burge was fired in 1993. He was sentenced to prison in 2011 for lying in a civil case. Читать дальше...

PHOENIX (AP) — A judge has rejected a request by voting-rights groups to force Arizona Secretary of State Michele Reagan to send mailers to thousands of voters saying that their registration may be out of date. Judge James Teilborg says in a ruling Tuesday that voting-rights advocates didn't show that anyone had been disenfranchised by Reagan's alleged failure to update voter registration records in cases where people have informed motor vehicle offices they have new addresses. MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Northern Indiana Public Service Co. says it's considering retiring four of its five remaining coal-fired electricity generating units within five years and the other within a decade. The utility told a meeting of customers, consumer representatives, environmental organizations and other stakeholders Wednesday that internal planning shows a possible shutdown of the four-unit Schahfer Generating Station in Wheatfield no later than 2023 and its Michigan City Generating by 2028. GRETNA, La. (AP) — A state appeal court is reviewing a judge's order that state regulators reconsider the issuance of a permit for construction of part of the Bayou Bridge Pipeline in south Louisiana. Judge Alvin Turner said in April that the Department of Natural Resources violated state guidelines in issuing the permit. CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) _ Natural Alternatives International Inc. (NAII) on Wednesday reported fiscal fourth-quarter net income of $2.9 million. On a per-share basis, the Carlsbad, California-based company said it had profit of 41 cents. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains, were 38 cents per share. The nutritional supplements manufacturer posted revenue of $39.2 million in the period. For the year, the company reported profit of $5.1 million, or 73 cents per share. BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Indicted U.S. Rep. Chris Collins said Wednesday he'll campaign for his western New York seat, vowing to serve if voters re-elect him in November. The Republican's announcement on Twitter came two days after he said he would remain on the ballot despite previously suspending his campaign in the wake of federal insider trading charges. MACHIAS, Maine (AP) — A New York woman charged in the 2017 death of a Maine woman whose body was found alongside a road in Cherryfield has pleaded guilty to lesser charges. Quaneysha Greeley pleaded guilty Wednesday to hindering apprehension and trafficking drugs. The murder charges will be dismissed after she testifies against her co-defendant, another New Yorker who's accused of fatally shooting 55-year-old Sally Shaw and leaving her body alongside the road.
