Dirty Projectors keep pushing forward with new lineup

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Dirty Projectors hit reset with their self-titled 2017 release, which documented the dissolution of the love affair between singer-guitarist Amber Coffman and frontman David Longstreth. Longstreth now returns with yet another new lineup on the indie outfit’s eighth album, “Lamp Lit Prose.” Having collaborated with artists as diverse as Solange and Joanna Newsom, Longstreth’s music remains distinctly off-kilter with loops, strings and beats hanging together on beautifully strange melodies. «SFGate» (sfgate.com)

CAIRO (AP) — The Saudi-led coalition's assault on the rebel-held port city of Hodeida is the latest attempt to break years of stalemate in Yemen's devastating civil war. The Houthis swept into Yemen's capital, Sanaa, in 2014 and the coalition entered the war the following year. The fighting has killed more than 10,000 people, displaced 2 million... Читать дальше...

Skyscraper-Climbing Raccoon Rivets Internet: ‘Those Are Some Super Claws!’

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

That’s not spiderman — it’s a raccoon. A groundswell of observers are taken with a raccoon that scaled the UBS building in St. Paul, Minnesota (and no, as far as we know, it’s not Rocket from “Guardians of the Galaxy”). Minnesota Public Radio was quick to dub the critter the #MPRaccoon on Tuesday, and the hashtag has been trending on Twitter since. Someone even made an account for the animal, tweeting out “I made a big mistake.” By Wednesday, the raccoon’s account had more than 3,500 followers. St. Читать дальше...

Les Nubians bring signature ‘Afropean’ sound to Oakland

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

It’s been a while since sisters Hélène and Célia Faussart, a.k.a. Les Nubians, have released an album. Still, their music — a blend all their own of R&B, African influences and neo-soul — sounds as fresh as it did when Les Nubians began some 20 years ago. The duo from France are probably best known for their single “Makeda,” a leisurely track that puts their dulcet voices front and center. More recently, in 2010, Les Nubians put out a well-received album called “Nü Revolution.”... Читать дальше...

Weekend booking: Tommy Orange

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Tommy Orange’s debut novel, “There There,” just might be the most talked-about book of the season. And why not? Orange, who is 36, has a singular story to tell: that of the little-explored life of urban American Indians. Set in Oakland, where Orange grew up, his audacious novel follows the paths of a dozen characters, culminating in a Big Oakland Powwow at the Coliseum. Orange, who now lives in Angels Camp, in Calaveras County, will be at three readings in the Bay Area this weekend: 7 p.m. Thursday at City Lights Bookstore... Читать дальше...

Trump claim raises eyebrows: NKorea no longer a nuke threat?

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump declared on Wednesday there was "no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea," a dubious claim following his summit with leader Kim Jong Un that produced no guarantees on how or when Pyongyang would disarm. Tempering Trump's very upbeat assessment, his top diplomat, Mike Pompeo, cautioned that the U.S. would resume "war games" with close ally South Korea if the North stops negotiating in good faith. The president had announced a halt in the drills after his meeting with Kim on Tuesday. Читать дальше...

Conviction in 2011 murder thrown out over bad verdict form

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

LAPEER, Mich. (AP) — A murder conviction after a 12-day trial in Lapeer County has been thrown out because of a bad verdict form. Ken Grondin III was found guilty of first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of his 20-year-old girlfriend. But the Michigan appeals court says the jury might have been confused. The verdict form suggested there were two crimes, first-degree murder and second-degree murder. The court says a juror could have believed there was no option to find Grondin not guilty of all charges. Читать дальше...
