SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — A University of Illinois alumna says officials should form closer ties with the Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma and reinvent the university's former mascot. Colleen McCoy graduated from the university in 1988. She tells the News-Gazette that the university should ask the Peoria Tribe to endorse the "Fighting Illini" name and work with the tribe to create a new version of the Chief Illiniwek mascot. WASHINGTON — The Trump administration moved Friday to place new restrictions on access to abortion, as the Health and Human Services Department prepared new regulations that would effectively bar organizations that receive federal family planning money from providing abortions or counseling mothers about the procedure. HAVANA (AP) — Cuban media say a Boeing 737 operated by state airline Cubana has crashed on takeoff from Jose Marti International Airport in Havana with 104 passengers on board. There was no immediate word on casualties. State television and websites said the plane was headed to the eastern city of Holguin and crashed between the airport in southern Havana and the nearby town of Santiago de las Vegas. The plane was rented by Cubana, which has taken many of its aging planes out of service in recent months due to mechanical problems.

MADISON, Mo. (AP) — A Columbia man will likely spend the rest of his life in prison for a shooting death of a northeast Missouri man. The Moberly Monitor Index reports 36-year-old Jason Lee Lage was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison plus 50 years in the killing of 32-year-old Zachary Dawson. Lage was found guilty in March of second-degree murder and armed criminal action. (AP) — An elementary school student was hit by a motorcycle after getting off his school bus in Lake Stevens, Washington Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports it happened around 4:00 p.m. Thursday. Police say the motorcyclist passed a police cruiser going the opposite way. LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — An Arkansas man and his son have been sentenced to federal prison for their involvement with explosives. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that U.S. District Judge D. A whale that may have been carried into San Francisco Bay on the bow of a freighter was found dead Friday morning near Jack London Square in Oakland, officials said. The large, dark carcass was spotted on its side beneath a bridge in Brooklyn Basin in the Oakland Estuary. Authorities have not determined its species or cause of death.
