The Latest: Coast Guard: Avoid area where lava entering sea

PAHOA, Hawaii (AP) — The Latest on an erupting volcano on Hawaii's Big Island (all times local): 11 a.m. The Coast Guard is warning boats to stay away from where lava is flowing into the ocean on Hawaii's Big Island unless they have prior approval. Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. John Bannon says in a statement Sunday that "getting too close to the lava can result in serious injury or death." Michigan trooper injured when DUI driver strikes patrol car

DETROIT (AP) — A Michigan state trooper was treated for minor injuries after a woman suspected of drunk driving crashed into his parked patrol car. Michigan State Police tweeted that Trooper Matt Unterbrink was assisting another officer by using his car to block traffic on Interstate 96 when his vehicle was struck in the rear. State police said Unterbrink was treated for unspecified injuries and released. He and his canine partner, Boz, are expected to return to work in a few days. 2 Ohio inmates recaptured after correctional center escape

LEBANON, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say two inmates were recaptured less than a day after they fled an Ohio correctional facility. The Warren County Sheriff's Office says the inmates escaped from the Community Correctional Center in Warren County in southwestern Ohio about 8:30 p.m. Saturday and were recaptured about 3 p.m. Sunday. Bridge replacement to close rural route near Peoria

LA ROSE, Ill. (AP) — An often traveled rural road near Peoria will be closed for a summer-long bridge replacement project. The Peoria Journal Star reports that County Road 2100E, which is commonly referred to as South La Rose Road, will close starting Monday for the nearly $1 million project. Work on the bridge that spans Crow Creek is expected to be finished by Sept. 7. Officials say a segment of the route more than a mile long will be shut down during that time.

Yellowstone counts fewer visits so far compared to last year

BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) — Fewer people have visited Yellowstone National Park so far this year compared to the same time frame last year. The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reports that for the year, the park has counted 123,949 visits. That's slightly behind 2017, which had recorded a little more than 130,000 visits by this point. Park officials say the difference is almost entirely because of a decline in April. The park counted 37,766 recreational visits for the month, a 16 percent drop from 2017's April total of 45,160. Cougar returned to killed Washington state cyclist after being scared off

Two friends riding their bikes in a mountainous, wooded area of Washington state Saturday morning were attacked by a cougar, which killed one of them in the state’s first such fatality in more than 90 years, officials said. Authorities said the two cyclists saw the cougar, a 100-pound male, in pursuit and one of them screamed. Weekend train back for Cape-bound travelers sick of traffic

Keolis, the MBTA's commuter rail operator, says the train will operate round-trip service between South Station and Hyannis on weekends through Labor Day. The CapeFlyer makes stops in Braintree, Brockton, Middleboro, Wareham and Buzzards Bay. The first trip of the season is scheduled for Friday. The train will also run this year on July 3 to 4. BOUTTE, La. (AP) — Authorities say a helicopter carrying three people has crashed in south Louisiana. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro says the Hughes 369 helicopter crashed about 10 miles (16 kilometers) southwest of New Orleans on Sunday morning. The names of those aboard the helicopter have not been released. Molinaro says he doesn't know the extent of injuries. Florida crime tech arrested for stealing drugs from dead

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) — A Florida sheriff's office employee and crime scene technician is accused of stealing drugs from dead people. The Pensacola News Journal reported that Christine Rollins was arrested Friday after an investigation revealed she had been stealing narcotics from the Escambia County Sheriff's Office evidence building. Wichita homeless shelter to be first in area to accept pets

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Inter-Faith Ministries in Wichita says its homeless shelter will begin accepting people with pets by later summer or early fall.
