Beekeeper keeps the hives thriving in Moses Lake

MOSES LAKE, Wash. (AP) — With winter now upon us and temperatures dipping into the mid- to low 20s, the honey bees at Grigg Apiaries, Inc. have been tucked away for the season. About 8,000 hives keep alive and warm while residing in Travis and Brandy Grigg's shop, awaiting the day when they will be released once more. "We are always checking health and feed supply," said Travis. In January, the bees will be put back to work, pollinating orchards and fields throughout California, Washington and Montana. Police in Alabama say 4 injured in New Year's Day shooting

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Police in north Alabama say four people suffered gunshot wounds in a New Year's Day shooting. Local news outlets report that multiple shooters were involved in the shooting outside the Palladium Event Center in Huntsville shortly after midnight. Police say one victim is 18 and the others are in their early 20s. Paramedics took three of the victims to a hospital, while the fourth arrived at a hospital in a personal vehicle. Savannah moves ahead with plans for new 9,000-seat arena

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — The Savannah City Council has approved a $2.8 million contract for a firm to manage construction of a new arena. The planned 9,000-seat arena is expected to take about 38 months to design and construct, The Savannah Morning News reported. The consultant will be responsible for keeping the project on schedule and within budget — now estimated at $160 million. Authorities: Motive sought in fatal Newark street shooting

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a man shot in New Jersey's largest city has died from his injuries. Essex County prosecutors say 53-year-old Newark resident Arthur Ruff was pronounced dead around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, about 30 minutes after the street shooting took place near 2nd Street and Central Avenue in the city. No other injuries were reported in the shooting. Authorities say a motive for the shooting remains under investigation. No arrests have been made.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh to take oath for second term

Chicago sees drop in homicides, shootings in 2017

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago police says there was less gun violence in the city in 2017 compared to the year before, but the total number of homicides still topped the 600 mark for only the second time in more than a decade. Statistics released by the police department on Monday show the number of homicides fell from 771 in 2016 to 650 in 2017. Vandals knock over headstones as they vandalize cemetery

RICHLAND TOWNSHIP, Kan. (AP) — Authorities say a vandal or vandals knocked over dozens of headstones and tore emblems off veterans markers in a night of vandalism. The Wichita Eagle reports that residents discovered the vandalism Richland Township cemetery Friday. Graves had been urinated upon and memorial flowers had been shredded, and the cemetery's U.S. flag had been stolen. State lifts remaining health advisories for blue-green algae

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The state has lifted the remaining health advisories that were put in place for several bodies of water because of blue-green algae blooms. The Department of Health and Department of Environmental Management lifted the advisories, which had cautioned people to avoid contact and recreational activities with several ponds. Those ponds were: Blackamore Pond and Spectacle Pond in Cranston, Almy Pond in Newport and Roger Williams Park Ponds in Providence. Law aimed at opioid crisis comes into effect

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A new law aimed at addressing Maine's opioid crisis is coming into effect as advocates demand more urgency. Law enforcement officials say 376 Mainers died of a drug overdose in 2016. Republican Rep. Deborah Sanderson backed a new law that requires Maine health care providers to have an opioid medication prescribing policy by Jan. 1. 2nd suspect in fatal Joplin shooting caught

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) — A second suspect has been arrested in the Christmas Eve slaying of a man in Joplin. The Joplin Globe reports that police arrested 47-year-old Artilius Jordan without incident Thursday evening. Police say he fatally shot 47-year-old Sean Harris at apartment complex Dec. 24. Police say Jordan believed Harris has engaged in sex with Jordan's girlfriend. Another Joplin man, 27-year-old Moses Ramsey, was arrested Tuesday. Man dies after crashing car at entrance to Trinity College

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Police say a man has been killed in a New Year's Day crash at the entrance to Trinity College in Hartford. WFSB-TV reports that the 22-year-old man died early Monday after he hit a brick column at the entrance. Hartford Police say a woman and a 12-year-old child were also in the car and treated for non-life threatening injuries. The man was rushed to Hartford Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police have not publicly identified him. Police say he was speeding.

Milwaukee hunter dies after falling out of tree stand

GREENFIELD, Wis. (AP) — A Milwaukee man is dead after falling out of a tree stand while hunting in Sauk County on Sunday. The sheriff's office says 50-year-old Jacob Herr was wearing a safety harness, but it had not been attached to the tree. A hunting companion found Herr's body at the base of the tree.

Fire destroys barn at business in Mondovi; cause unknown

MONDOVI, Wis. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the cause of a weekend fire at a Mondovi business. WEAU-TV reports that a passer-by alerted authorities after seeing smoke coming from a barn at Loomis Lazy L Tack and Trailer Sales early Sunday afternoon. The Buffalo County Sheriff's Department says the building was destroyed. No injuries to people were reported. It's not known if any livestock died.
