DOST Region I calls on Ilocano students to apply for scholarships

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region I is encouraging students from the Ilocos Region to file their applications for the DOST Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS).

DOST calls on students with an aptitude for science and mathematics to take advantage of the program. Interested applicants may file their applications through the DOST JLSS Program Campaign, done in collaboration with DZAG Radyo Pilipinas Agoo.

The weekly radio program titled Tekno Presyensya: Syensya ken Teknolohiya para kadagiti Umili, aired the announcement on its recent episode.

Adelisa C. Florendo, DOST-I’s Regional Scholarship Coordinator, spoke about the JLSS Program, with topics on “who are qualified to apply, what are the requirements needed, how to go through the application?” down to the benefits and other considerations to be made before, during, and after the scholarship grant.

The DOST-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) handles the JLSS program which aims to provide scholarships that will finance the education of talented and deserving students who are pursuing degree programs in the fields of science and technology in their third year of college. It also aims to ensure a steady, adequate supply of qualified S&T human resources who can lead the nation toward national progress.

The scholarship comes in three types, namely: the Republic Act No. 7687, also known as the “Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994” which provides for scholarships to talented and deserving students whose families’ socio-economic status does not exceed the set cut-off values of certain indicators, and in which qualifiers must pursue priority fields of study in the basic sciences, engineering, other applied sciences, and science and mathematics teaching.

Next is the DOST-SEI Merit Scholarship Program which is awarded to students with high aptitude in science and mathematics and are willing to pursue careers in the fields of science and technology.

The third one is the Republic Act No. 10612 which aims to strengthen the country’s science and technology education by fast-tracking graduates in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering who shall teach science and mathematics in secondary schools throughout the country.​ All interested applicants are encouraged to apply online and upload all the needed requirements through the E-Scholarship Application System at https://jlss.science-scholarships.ph/​ DOST-I expressed their utmost gratitude and praised former DOST Secretary Fortunato de la Peña for his hard work, integrity, and dedication to public service.

“Although the past six years of his service have been a rollercoaster as he dealt with the pandemic’s challenges, he was able to persevere and thrive because of his dedication to bringing science to the people, particularly through his full support of the different DOST scholarship programs,” DOST said in a statement.
