HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (AP) — A Long Island town is changing its name to "Hauntington" for Halloween at the urging of a 7-year-old resident. Newsday reports second grader Angelica Dee Cunningham was all smiles when she learned Huntington was making the one-day switch Wednesday. The town council unanimously approved the switch last week. Angelica's parents encouraged her to write to town officials after she blurted her "Hauntington" idea out during a car ride. She sent a handwritten note explaining how the name would be fun to say... OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Police in Northern California are investigating whether a decaying human head found in an Oakland backyard belongs to a recently discovered headless corpse. Oakland Sgt. Michael Cardoza says two people visiting an Oakland apartment complex found the head last week in the grassless yard with a couple of trees and took it to a police station. Cardoza says homicide detectives interviewed all the residents of the three-apartment building and that it didn't appear they were involved. Читать дальше...
NEW YORK — Swastikas scrawled into Jewish students’ notebooks. Headstones toppled and desecrated by vandals at Jewish cemeteries. Jews falsely blamed for challenges facing the nation. The shooting rampage that killed 11 people at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life Synagogue on Saturday is being decried as the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history, allegedly carried out by an anti-Semitic gunman. The carnage, however unprecedented, is not an aberration. Year after year, decade after decade, anti-Semitism... Читать дальше...

LOS ANGELES — More than 700,000 immigrants are waiting on applications to become U.S. citizens, a process that once typically took about six months but has stretched to more than two years in some places under the administration of President Trump. The long wait times have prompted some immigrant advocates to ask whether the delays are aimed at keeping anti-Trump voters from casting ballots in elections. “People are motivated to participate, and they’re being frustrated from being able to participate... State filings show Heitkamp's contribution last week came just days after she herself hauled in about $12.4 million in the first half of October. The flood of cash to Heitkamp came during the period in which she voted against Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination. Heitkamp's party recently sent about $450,000 to four... Читать дальше...

WASHINGTON (AP) — A meticulous re-creation of a three decade-old study of birds on a mountainside in Peru has given scientists a rare chance to prove how the changing climate is pushing species out of the places they are best adapted to. Surveys of more than 400 species of birds in 1985 and then in 2017 have found that populations of almost all had declined, as many as eight had disappeared completely, and nearly all had moved to higher elevations in what scientists call "an escalator to extinction." "Once you move up as far as you can go... Читать дальше...

JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) — A dead moose in Wyoming probably won't attract grizzly bears now that forest officials have used explosives to blow the rotting meat to smithereens. Bridger-Teton National Forest wildlife managers don't normally do anything about dead wildlife in the huge backcountry area that borders Yellowstone National Park. But they worried the big carcass could draw dangerous animals to a nearby trail that's popular with hikers, hunters and dog-walkers. So they used 100 pounds (45 kilograms)... Читать дальше...

A: Homes will be better insulated and air-cooling systems will become the rule, rather than the exception, in San Francisco. Roofs will be covered with water catch systems, vegetation or solar panels. You won’t see dark colored roofing materials, which absorb heat and increase urban temperatures. Solar panels will generate electricity to supply power to the entire household. The electrical grid must allow power transmission between home and grid. Rainwater will be collected and re-used, rather than allowed to flow through sewer systems. Читать дальше...
