Dallas leaders' proactive stance helps tamp down protest

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

DALLAS (AP) — Dallas police swiftly admitted that a white officer who shot a black man in his own apartment last week had made a mistake. They expressed contrition, turned the case over to independent investigators and reached out to the victim's family. That proactive approach appeared to tamp down anger in the community in the first few days after the killing on Sept. 6. There have been protests but not large-scale unrest since the death of Botham Jean, a native of the Caribbean island of St. Lucia... Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The Panthers will be without three-time Pro Bowl tight end Greg Olsen and second-team All-Pro Bowl right tackle Daryl Williams for the foreseeable future. The team announced Tuesday that Olsen re-fractured the right foot that kept him out of nine games last season in Carolina’s 16-8 win over Dallas on Sunday. Olsen, 33, will not have surgery and will be reevaluated on a “monthly basis.” He’ll remain on the team’s roster in hopes that he can return later in the season as he did a year ago. Williams... Montana sheriff suspended following criminal charges

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

BUTTE, Mont. David Wright is getting better, but will the Mets activate him?

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

With three weeks left in a season they’d rather forget, Mets players, coaches, executives and staff members gathered Saturday behind the batting cage at Citi Field to watch and wonder about the man who has meant so much to the franchise. Their focus: third baseman David Wright, the captain who has not played in a major-league game since May 27, 2016. Operations on his neck, shoulder and back, plus a back ailment and rehabilitation, have sidelined him. The Mets also were paying attention because of insurance payments. Читать дальше...

49ers happy circumstances led them to linebacker Fred Warner

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

In April, when Reuben Foster was facing three felony charges, the 49ers used an early third-round draft pick on BYU inside linebacker Fred Warner. In June, when asked if the 49ers would have selected Warner if not for Foster’s legal issues, vice president of player personnel Adam Peters offered a non-response. It confirmed what appeared obvious. “That’s probably a question,” Peters said, smiling, “that I don’t want to answer.” Yes, Foster’s uncertain future almost certainly motivated the 49ers to draft Warner. Naomi Osaka’s US Open title shouldn’t be overshadowed

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

It’s easy to pick a winner out of the circus that passed for the U.S. Open women’s final Saturday. That would be the actual winner, Naomi Osaka. Osaka was dominating Serena Williams throughout the match, and Osaka was headed for victory. There is no asterisk. The fact that she steeled herself to beat the greatest player in the history of women’s tennis, through tears and sympathy and emotions unknown, spoke to a champion’s mentality the 20-year-old was forced to develop on the sport’s biggest stage. Naeem Khan creates an ode in color, black to '70s New York

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — With healthy doses of bright pinks and yellows, in butterfly prints and a palm motif, Naeem Khan's spring-summer collection felt sunny side up at New York Fashion Week. There was, of course, plenty of the bling Khan is known for in gowns that have landed on the backs of queens and first ladies. Those allowed to wear open backs, one-shoulder in jersey and raffia fringe are more than welcome. Khan was inspired this time around by Halston, Studio 54, Andy Warhol and Truman Capote's Black and White Ball... Читать дальше...

Hurricanes have failed to spur flood insurance reform bill

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

WASHINGTON — U.S. taxpayers who spent billions of dollars after a trifecta of hurricanes last year are poised to do so again after a fix to the nation’s troubled flood insurance program remains stalled in Congress — and as a dangerous new storm barrels toward the southern Atlantic coast. The program, administered through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is the primary source of flood insurance in the U.S., with about 5 million policy holders across the country. But it remains more than $20... Читать дальше...

Report: Raiders nearing reunion with WR Martavis Bryant

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Ten days after the Raiders cut receiver Martavis Bryant, it appears they’re bringing him back. NFL Network reported Tuesday afternoon the Raiders were nearing an agreement to re-sign Bryant on a one-year deal. The Raiders waived Bryant, 26, as part of their 53-man roster cut-downs on Sept. 1. The move would continue a strange saga between the Raiders and the talented but troubled receiver. Oakland traded a third-round pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers in April for Bryant, who presented a downfield threat with his mix of size (6-foot-4) and speed.

CBS exec's downfall shows the power — and limits — of #MeToo

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — Is Les Moonves' departure from CBS a breakthrough for the #MeToo movement? While he is the most powerful CEO brought down yet by sexual misconduct allegations over the past year, CBS is facing criticism for not pushing him out sooner, for thanking him in its announcement and for offering him a potential $120 million in severance. Others say his downfall still serves as a warning that even the most powerful bosses cannot hide. And some prominent activists cautiously welcomed the announcement... Читать дальше...
