HONOLULU (AP) — A Big Island landowner is planning to add about 940 homes to the Puna community of Keaau, an area in need of housing after lava flows destroyed hundreds of homes in neighboring areas. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the state Office of Environmental Quality Control published a draft environmental assessment last week on the project by W.H. Shipman Ltd. HONOLULU (AP) — A report shows that the Hawaii Department of Education's fraud and ethics hotline has received more than 500 tips since 2016, resulting in one termination case. Hawaii News Now reports that a review prepared for the state education board indicates that 222 of the tips led to formal reviews with 59 claims found substantiated. According to the report, the majority of the 59 substantiated cases involved human resources issues, but others included misuse of department resources, fiscal impropriety and falsification of records. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say a kayaker was struck and killed by a power boat Monday in a popular Los Angeles marina. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Deryl Walker tells the Los Angeles Times that a power boat about 50 feet long hit the kayaker in Marina del Rey. He says a woman's body has been recovered but has yet to be identified.
