NEW YORK (AP) — If you quit smoking and gain weight, it may seem like you're trading one set of health problems for another. But a new U.S. study finds you're still better off in the long run. Compared with smokers, even the quitters who gained the most weight had at least a 50 percent lower risk of dying prematurely from heart disease and other causes, the Harvard-led study found. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — University of New Mexico leaders are warning that enrollment could be significantly lower than initially projected. The Albuquerque Journal reports the university already predicted a 2.5 percent drop, but Terry Babbitt, the school's vice provost for enrollment management and analytics, said Tuesday the drop is "going to be quite a bit bigger." WAUWATOSA, Wis. (AP) _ Briggs & Stratton Corp. (BGG) on Wednesday reported a fiscal fourth-quarter loss of $11.8 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier. On a per-share basis, the Wauwatosa, Wisconsin-based company said it had a loss of 29 cents. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were 47 cents per share. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — A former Missouri state trooper who was driving a boat when a handcuffed Iowa man fell out and drowned is suing to get his peace officers' license back. Anthony Piercy filed a lawsuit this week against the Missouri Department of Public Safety and the agency's director. WASHINGTON (AP) — A bipartisan Senate study says the government has made only incremental improvements to its troubled efforts to care for thousands of migrant children detained entering the U.S. without their parents. It says the Trump administration has aggravated the problem with its "zero tolerance" immigration crackdown.
