NEW YORK (AP) — The nation's newsrooms are pushing back against President Donald Trump with a coordinated series of newspaper editorials condemning his attacks on "fake news" and suggestion that journalists are the enemy. The Boston Globe invited newspapers across the country to stand up for the press with editorials on Thursday, and several began appearing online a day earlier. In St. Louis, the Post-Dispatch called journalists "the truest of patriots ." The Chicago Sun-Times said it believed most Americans know that Trump is talking nonsense.



FCC shuts down Alex Jones' pirate flagship radio station

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Federal Communications Commission has shut down a pirate radio station that served as the flagship outlet for conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. The Austin American-Statesman reports the FCC also has fined the station's operators $15,000 — a fine the FCC says in a lawsuit the operators are refusing to pay. Woman accused of stealing from Albuquerque rehab patients

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — State prosecutors say a former office manager at an Albuquerque rehabilitation center has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $30,000 from elderly patients who suffered from dementia. The New Mexico Attorney General's Office says Leanne Bennett could face up to three years in prison when she's sentenced on Oct. 18 and be required to pay more than $44,000 in restitution to the victims. Dismissal of ex-inmate's suit over jail sex assault upheld

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A federal appeals court has upheld the dismissal of a lawsuit against Phelps County and county law enforcement officials filed by a woman who says she was sexually assaulted by a county jail guard in 2012. The woman says she was assaulted by former Phelps County jail guard Louis Campana during the five days she spent in the jail. Man charged with 5th DUI gets 6 years in prison

GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi man charged in 2016 with his fifth DUI offense has been sentenced to six years in prison. WLOX-TV reports 40-year-old Brad Lee Heflin pleaded guilty Monday to driving under the influence. The newspaper says police responding to a report of a careless driver in Gulfport found Heflin, who police say smelled of alcohol. Swimmer suffers puncture wounds in shark attack on Cape Cod

TRURO, Mass. (AP) — A man swimming off Cape Cod has been attacked by a shark and is being airlifted to a hospital. The assistant harbormaster in Truro, Massachusetts, says the victim is a 61-year-old man. Gary Sharpless says the unidentified victim suffered puncture wounds to his torso and legs Wednesday afternoon. Sharpless says the attack happened around 4 p.m. at Long Nook Beach in Truro. Design flaw in state-issued IDs may cause issues at airport

Former sheriff's deputy guilty: marijuana, malfeasance

Police say man arrested for carjacking pastor

CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) — A man is in custody for allegedly carjacking a pastor in Rhode Island. Cranston police say a pastor was standing next to his car on Wednesday when 28-year-old Casimir Dynak pulled out a gun, threatened him and took off in his car. WPRI-TV reports police searched the area and boxed in the car Dynak was driving. They say he was bluffing about the weapon. Dynak will be facing several charges.
