U of Illinois grad student strike continues for fourth day

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — University of Illinois graduate students are striking for a fourth day after 11 months of unsuccessful talks with administrators on a new contract. The school's Graduate Employees Organization went on strike Monday. The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports Thursday that school officials say 139 graduate employees are striking and that of 2,870 classes scheduled Wednesday about 30 were moved and 56 were canceled. INDIANAPOLIS -- General manager John Lynch said the 49ers have had “ongoing” talks with free agent running back Carlos Hyde’s camp, though the possibility of his return next season remains uncertain. Hyde, 27, will be an unrestricted free agent on March 14. Oklahoma health officials say fly has killed 194 this season

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma State Department of Health says this season's flu death toll has reached 194 in Oklahoma and that more than 4,100 people have been hospitalized with flu-related symptoms. Health officials said Thursday that 157 people have been hospitalized with the flu since Feb. 21, but that no new deaths were recorded. Immunization rate for kindergarteners at 94 percent

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — State health officials say North Dakota's immunization rate for kindergarteners remains at about 94 percent for all required vaccines. The information is from the Department of Health's 2017-2018 school immunization assessment. Health department epidemiologist Lexie Barber says a 95 percent rate is the goal which is recommended to maintain immunity in schools and prevent outbreaks. Bill to OK lethal doses to terminally ill set for House vote

Mom of slain medical student says daughter a 'warm person'

BOSTON (AP) — The medical student stabbed to death in a Massachusetts library is being remembered by her mother as "The Little Engine That Could." Michal Kenny said in a statement to The Boston Globe that 22-year-old Deane Kenny Stryker was a "very warm person" who "always did the right thing" and had wanted to be a doctor since she was a little girl. Wine grape harvest last year down 16 percent from 2016

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — The wine grape harvest in Washington state last year totaled 227,000 tons, down 16 percent from 2016. Washington State Wine's annual Grape Crush Report showed that the 2017 harvest was slightly larger than the 2015 harvest. Cabernet Sauvignon was the top producing variety at 62,200 tons, or 27 percent of the total. Chardonnay was at 39,300 tons, or 17 percent of the total. Professor guilty of child porn charge must return to China

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — A former University of Wyoming professor who pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography has been ordered to leave the U.S. and return to China within 90 days. KTWO-AM reports Jian Cai pleaded guilty in November and was sentenced Tuesday. U.S. District Judge Nancy Freudenthal also ordered Cai to pay $6,000 in restitution. Minnesota cops seize more meth, prescription pills in 2017

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota authorities saw notable increases in the amount of meth, prescription pills, heroin and marijuana they took off the street last year. Data provided Thursday from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety says more than 214,000 prescription pills were seized by drug and gang investigators in 2017. That's up from nearly 59,000 pills in 2016. The huge increase includes at least one significant seizure of more than 100,000 pills. But authorities are also seeing other drugs in greater quantities. Separate stand your ground bills pass House and Senate

State plans probe into contaminated site in Lake Havasu City

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. (AP) — A state agency is planning to conduct a remedial investigation at a former manufacturing plant in western Arizona after soil and groundwater contaminants were found. Today's News-Herald reports the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality expects to begin the investigation in April at a site in Lake Havasu City.
