«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The Latest on the nationwide student walkout to protest gun violence (all times local): 4:45 p.m. Fifteen North Carolina students have been suspended for walking out of class during a nationwide protest against gun violence, but their principal also lauded their resolve. WITN-TV in Greenville reports 16 students at North East Carolina Prep School in Tarboro walked out of class Wednesday. Principal Phillip Lampron told the students that if they returned to class immediately, they wouldn't be punished. Читать дальше...

Why the Deaf ‘This Close’ Creators Were ‘Totally Fine’ That Our Interview Was a Little Awkward

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

“This Close” is groundbreaking in many way and not just because it was the first dramedy to go straight-to-series from Sundance Now, but also because it was created, written and stars Shoshannah Stern and Josh Feldman — who are both deaf. About halfway into TheWrap‘s recent interview with the show creators, this reporter realized she was doing something really weird: talking with her hands way more than usual. I think this was a subconscious attempt to match how Stern and Feldman were speaking to me ... Читать дальше...

ESPN Analyst Sean McDonough on ‘Monday Night Football’ Exit: ‘It Wasn’t a Tremendous Amount of Fun’

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Following last week’s announcement that Sean McDonough will no longer be in the booth for “Monday Night Football,” the analyst had some surprisingly candid comments to make about ESPN’s biggest sports property on Thursday. McDonough told WEEI’s “Kirk & Callahan” that “MNF” was generally “one of the worst NFL games each week,” and said it was a challenge to make it sound “interesting and exciting.” Jon Gruden’s former partner left the “MNF” booth after just two years, having replaced Mike Tirico in 2016. "We are safer today," state Rep. Tarah Toohil declared. Toohil alleges fellow Republican Rep. Nick Miccarelli was physically abusive during a relationship that ended in 2012 and has been physically intimidating her at the Capitol this year. Miccarelli has not been charged and vehemently denies her allegations. Читать дальше...

The Raiders finalized a deal with former Packers receiver Jordy Nelson on Thursday, according to multiple reports. They also released receiver Michael Crabtree, who’d played the last three seasons in Oakland. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report Crabtree’s release. Inmate death shines light on cellmate pairings at US prisons

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Glenn Cox went before the parole board with a plan and a bandage on his forehead. He had already been accepted into a live-in substance abuse treatment center. For the first time in a long time, he was hopeful about the future. And the bandage? He'd slipped on a freshly mopped prison bathroom floor, he told parole commissioners. No big deal. After reviewing his case, including his criminal history of 12 drunken driving arrests, the board sent him back to prison with a tentative parole date two years out. Читать дальше...

‘Journey’s End’ Film Review: Oft-Told WWI Tale Gets a Respectable Outing

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

There’s no mistaking it. Saul Dibb’s “Journey’s End” looks, feels and plays exactly like the prototypical World War I movie, the kind we’ve all seen dozens of times already, if not more. But although that might read like some sort of insult, it’s not. It’s objectively true. “Journey’s End” was originally written by English playwright R.C. Sherriff and first performed in 1928. Its intimate, suspenseful, and ultimately rather bleak portrayal of life and death in the trenches was adapted to the big screen by James Whale (“Frankenstein”) in 1930... Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Draymond Green and David West are expected to return from injuries for the Warriors on Friday night against Sacramento. West, who has missed the past five games with a cyst on his right arm, is probable for Friday night’s game, according to Kerr. Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas legislators are debating a bill designed to keep guns out of the hands of fugitives and domestic abusers and could consider other gun issues. The Senate planned to take a final vote Thursday on the measure. The bill would make it a felony under state law for anyone convicted of domestic violence to possess a firearm within five years of conviction. It would also be illegal for fugitives to possess guns. But senators expected to take up other gun proposals as well during their debate. Читать дальше...

Georgia court rules against Fiat Chrysler in Jeep fire case

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia's highest court has ruled against Fiat Chrysler, which had appealed a $40 million verdict awarded to the family of a 4-year-old boy who died in a Jeep fire. Remington "Remi" Walden died in 2012 after the Jeep Grand Cherokee he was riding in was hit from behind and burst into flames. The boy's parents argued the company's rear-mounted fuel tank design showed reckless disregard for human life. Fiat Chrysler had asked the Georgia Supreme Court for a new trial or, barring that, asked for the award to be reduced. Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A U.S. appeals court is upholding a ruling that a Utah contractor with ties to a polygamous group must still set aside $200,000 to pay back wages to children who prosecutors say were forced to pick pecans. But the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals said in a ruling issued Tuesday that the lower court judge erred in assigning Paragon Contractors a special master to monitor the company. «SFGate» (sfgate.com)

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal are voicing concern about President Donald Trump's push to arm teachers, despite a state law that generally makes it illegal to possess a firearm on the grounds of a elementary or secondary school. The two Democrats said Thursday they worry the president may try to pre-empt such state laws in order to arm teachers. Blumenthal says it's possible that Trump might issue an executive order or push for a federal... Читать дальше...

Iowa soybean leaders worry about farm trade, travel to China

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A group of Iowa soybean farmers will travel to China this week in hopes of smoothing over any rift in the trade relationship caused by the Trump administration's announced tariffs on steel and aluminum. Iowa Soybean Association President Bill Shipley says now isn't the time for the U.S. to retreat as a trusted source of soybeans because U.S. commodity prices are sliding and other countries are ramping up production. Nearly one of every four rows of soybeans grown in Iowa is destined for China. Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

ABUJA, Nigeria — Facing different but equally harrowing crises, parents and educators in the United States and northeast Nigeria are debating similarly drastic measures to improve school safety as a painful public reckoning plays out in both countries. As students hold walkouts across the U.S. amid a scourge of mass shootings, President Trump’s proposal to put more guns in schools carries echoes of questions being asked in one corner of Africa’s most populous country. By releasing Crabtree, a move the team has not confirmed, the Raiders would save $7.7 million against the 2018 salary cap - room they would use to acquire Nelson, who was released by the Green Bay Packers earlier this week. Nelson arrived in the Bay Area to meet with the Raiders on Wednesday... Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

CRESSON, Texas (AP) — A fire at a Texas chemical plant Thursday injured two workers and left a third unaccounted for, and fire crews weren't able to battle the blaze because of the toxic fumes being spewed into the air, an official said. He said that worker caught fire from the waist up and was airlifted... Читать дальше...
