«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

TORRANCE, Calif. (AP) — A man has died after Torrance police shocked him with a Taser. Police say officers were called to a Crate & Barrel store in the Los Angeles suburb Monday afternoon by a report of a man in the parking lot holding a knife and throwing items. When officers arrived, the man refused their commands and ran off. Police say officers tackled the man and during a fight, he tried to grab an officer's gun and was shocked with a Taser. His arms and legs were then restrained. Police... Читать дальше...

1 Senator retires: Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, the longest-serving Senate Republican, announced Tuesday he will retire at the end of the year, rebuffing the pleas of President Trump to seek an eighth term and paving the way for Mitt Romney to run for the seat. Hatch, 83, was under heavy pressure from Trump to seek re-election and block Romney, who has been sharply critical of the president. But Hatch, who emerged as one of the president’s most avid loyalists in the Senate, decided to retire after discussing... Читать дальше...

Criminal underworld dropping bitcoin

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Bitcoin is losing its luster with some of its earliest and most avid fans — criminals — giving rise to a new breed of virtual currency. Privacy coins such as monero, designed to avoid tracking, have climbed faster over the past two months as law enforcers adopt software tools to monitor people using bitcoin. A slew of analytic firms such as Chainalysis are getting better at flagging digital hoards linked to crime or money laundering, alerting exchanges and preventing conversion into traditional cash.

1 No age limit: Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni signed into law a bill that removes a presidential age limit from the constitution and allows him to run for election again, deputy spokeswoman Linda Nabusayi confirmed Tuesday. Museveni, one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders and a U.S. ally, is 73 and would have been ineligible to run in 2021. Now he could rule until 2031. Critics in the East African nation saw the bill as an attempt by the president to rule until the grave. The age limit had prevented... Читать дальше...

What you drive can reveal your political bent

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

What vehicle is most strongly associated with Republican voting districts? Extended-cab pickup trucks. For Democratic districts? Sedans. Those conclusions may not be particularly surprising. After all, market researchers and political analysts have studied such things for decades. But what is surprising is how researchers working on an ambitious project based at Stanford University reached those conclusions: by analyzing 50 million images and location data from Google Street View... Multiple news outlets reported Tuesday that the former TV news anchor who was elected party chair in 2013 will resign as of Feb. 5. Hutchison's statement didn't give a reason for her departure but her name has been floated as a possible candidate for an ambassadorship or other Trump administration appointment. Her announcement also comes after the GOP lost its majority in the state Senate in November. Читать дальше...

Sen. Hatch to retire, opening door for possible Romney run

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah said Tuesday he will not seek re-election after serving more than 40 years in the Senate, opening the door for 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney to run for his seat. The 83-year-old Hatch, the longest-serving Republican in the Senate, opted for retirement despite a full-court press from President Donald Trump to stay in Washington, particularly as Romney's ambition for the seat became apparent. Romney was a vocal critic of Trump's during... Читать дальше...

Trump throws full US support behind protesters in Iran

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration on Tuesday threw the weight of the U.S. government behind the protesters taking to the streets of Iran, rooting them on despite the risk of helping Iranian authorities dismiss a week of major demonstrations as the product of American instigation. As Iran's supreme leader accused "enemies of Iran" of trying to destabilize his country, the State Department pressed Tehran to unblock social media sites used by the protesters. It even offered advice to tech-savvy... Читать дальше...

Get a pencil: California's marijuana-tracking system delayed

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California's legal pot economy was supposed to operate under the umbrella of a vast computerized system to track marijuana from seed to storefronts, ensuring that plants are followed throughout the supply chain and don't drift into the black market. But recreational cannabis sales began this week without the computer system. Instead, businesses are being asked to document sales and transfers of pot manually, using paper invoices or shipping manifests. That raises the potential... Читать дальше...

Steve Kerr wants Draymond Green to know when to ‘pull back’ with referees

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Nearly halfway through the regular season, Warriors forward Draymond Green leads the NBA with 10 technical fouls. It is a troubling development for a team that recognizes how much more daunting of a matchup it is when Green is on the court. League rules dictate that a player receives an automatic one-game suspension once he gets assessed his 16th technical foul of the season, with him getting another one-game suspension for every two additional techs thereafter. At this rate, Green would pick up his 16th tech Feb. Читать дальше...

Fighting climate change with laundry

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

COPENHAGEN — A Danish biotechnology company is trying to fight climate change — one laundry load at a time. Its secret weapon: mushrooms like those in a dormant forest outside Copenhagen. In the quest for a more environmentally friendly detergent, two scientists at Novozymes trudge through the mud, hunting for oyster mushrooms that protrude from a fallen beech or bracken fungi that feast on tough plant fibers. They are studying the enzymes in mushrooms that speed up chemical reactions or natural processes such as decay. Читать дальше...

On Target? Last year, Amazon.com shook up the retail world with its $13.7 billion acquisition of Whole Foods. Another big purchase will happen in 2018, predicts a well-known technology analyst. Why ‘Today’ Looks Even Stronger Since Hoda Kotb Replaced Matt Lauer

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

There’s a good reason Hoda Kotb looks so comfortable in Matt Lauer’s former “Today” show chair: she’s a lot better-liked than he was, according to the main metric networks use to gauge the popularity of their stars. Kotb was named as Lauer’s replacement on Tuesday, just over a month after NBC fired him over sexual misconduct accusations. Everyone seems pretty stoked about the team of Kotb and Savannah Guthrie — and with good reason. According to the Q Scores Company, Kotb’s most-recent (September 2017) Positive Q Score was a 16... Читать дальше...
