Coast Guard ends search for small plane off South Carolina
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard says the search for a downed small airplane carrying five people off South Carolina's coast has been suspended.
Capt. John Reed, who commands the Coast Guard's Charleston station, told news outlets in statement Sunday morning that he spoke with the family of those who were on the plane and extended his deepest sympathies.
The twin-engine Piper PA-31 took off Thursday morning in Andrews and went missing more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) off the coast. It was bound for the Bahamas.
An in-flight emergency was reported to air traffic controllers before the plane fell off radar southeast of Charleston.
