Cal’s big win came after emotional players-only meeting
CORVALLIS, Ore. — Cal had a players-only meeting before its game at UCLA last year, with the seniors begging the underclassmen to give their all in the regular-season finale and find a way to earn a bowl berth.
The Bears didn’t wait until the last minute this time around.
After head coach Justin Wilcox addressed the team Friday night, he cleared the meeting room at the hotel of coaches and support staff and let the players hash it out on their own.
“It was an emotional meeting,” senior running back Patrick Laird said after Cal bounced back from a three-game skid with a 49-7 victory over Oregon State. “We talked about a lot of things we want to accomplish and our purpose and plans of action.
