A’s win, move five games over .500 at season’s midpoint
DETROIT — At the halfway point, it’s tough to tell whether the A’s are over-performing or if, given their rotation’s worth of pitching injuries, they might be a better team than they’ve shown.
Though their major-league record streak of road games with a homer ended at 27, the A’s are a season-high five games over .500 after defeating the Tigers 3-0 Wednesday. Before the season began, a .500 record seemed a reasonable goal for a young team, especially after three consecutive last-place finishes. Now, Oakland (43-38) is in third place in the AL West and third in the wild-card chase, seven games behind Seattle for the second wild-card spot.
“It’s been great to this point,” manager Bob Melvin said.
