Proposal to remove 'Early Days' statue in SF gets another chance
American Indians who want the city to remove a 124-year-old statue of a vaquero, a priest and a fallen Indian from its perch in Civic Center were granted a new chance to make their case Wednesday night.
The city’s Board of Appeals had ruled unanimously in April that the “Early Days” statue should remain in place, overturning decisions by the San Francisco Arts Commission and Historic Preservation Commission to put it in storage. The board said the historic commission had overlooked its duty to preserve history rather than concealing it.
