Firefighters contain blaze in San Rafael hills near Highway 101
A wind-driven brush fire Saturday in the hills of San Rafael was contained three hours after it ignited, officials said.
The fire was first reported at 3:25 p.m., said Bret McTigue, battalion chief of the Marin County Fire Department, which assisted with the incident. It burned in Boyd Memorial Park, near Highway 101.
Evacuation orders weren’t issued, but residents in the area were encouraged to shelter in place at one point, McTigue said.
The cause is under investigation. Some firefighters would patrol the area through the evening in case of any flare-ups, officials said.
“It’s burning in a grassy oak woodlands area surrounded by homes,” McTigue said in the afternoon.
