Hulu Renews ‘The Mindy Project’ For Sixth and Final Season
Mindy Kaling‘s sitcom “The Mindy Project” has been renewed by Hulu for a sixth — and ultimately final — season, the company announced Wednesday.
The new batch of episodes will begin playing in Sept. 2017 on Hulu, a spokesperson told TheWrap.
“The Mindy Project” has been airing since 2012. It stars Kaling as Mindy Lahiri, an OB/GYN who is aiming for the perfect romantic comedy ending, while trying to balance her personal and professional life.
The show originally aired on Fox, but was canceled after three seasons. A little over a week later, Hulu picked it up for a fourth season. It’s been running on the streaming service since then, although each season has had less episodes. In total, “The Mindy Project” has aired for over 100 episodes.
Since joining Hulu, Kaling said the show hasn’t had to worry about week-to-week ratings and that it was a relief to creators. “It’s completely set me free as an artist,” Kaling said at the TCA press tour.
“It has been an honor and a joy to work with Mindy and the entire creative team behind ‘The Mindy Project,'” Hulu head of content Craig Erwich said in a statement. “This series has been part of Hulu since we launched the service and, thanks to Mindy’s incredibly unique voice and vision, has remained one of our most popular and beloved series over the past five years. While we can’t wait to see what Mindy has in store for what will undoubtedly be a fantastic sixth and final season, we know ‘The Mindy Project’ will live on as fans will continue to watch, discover and re-live all of the best moments from the complete series on Hulu.”

The series also stars Ed Weeks (Jeremy Reed), Ike Barinholtz (Morgan Tookers), Beth Grant (Beverly), Xosha Roquemore (Tamra Webb), and Fortune Feimster (Colette Kimball-Kinney).
Kaling is already moving on to other projects. Her and Weeks just sold a new comedy to ABC, and she also executive produced a pilot with “Mindy Project” executive producer Charlie Grandy. She’s also set to star in “Oceans 8” and “A Wrinkle in Time.”
