London (dpa) - British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson was headed to Washington on Monday, one day after his meeting with Donald Trump‘s advisors in New York suggested the president-elect might not hold formal grudges against those who criticized him during his campaign.Johnson was due to meet congressional leaders in Washington after talks with Trump‘s team late Sunday focused on bilateral relations and other foreign policy issues, the British foreign office said.Johnson met Trump‘s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and the president-elect‘s chief strategist, Steve Bannon.Trump tweeted on Saturday he was looking forward to meeting Prime Minister Theresa May in Washington this spring."Britain, a longtime US ally, is very special!" he wrote.Trump has made a series of statements in recent months vowing to improve US relations with Russia and adopt a tougher stance with countries including Iran, China and North Korea. In December 2015, after Trump said parts of London were "so radicalized the police are afraid for their own lives," Johnson rejected his claim as "simply ridiculous.""I think he‘s betraying a quite stupefying ignorance that makes him frankly unfit to hold the office of president of the United States," Johnson, who was then London‘s mayor, told reporters at the time.Speaking as foreign secretary after the November 8 US presidential election, Johnson said Trump was "a dealmaker, and I think that could be a good thing for Britain."
