Balzan missed the chance to claim three valuable points after being held to a 3-3 draw by a spirited Sta Lucia side at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Sunday. Despite the funeral of Fra Matthew Festing last week being a solemn occasion, the burial of the 79th grand master of the Knights of St John also closed the book on the mystery of the final resting place of one of Malta’s most unpopular grand masters. The traditional panto will not be held for the second consecutive Christmas as preparations for the show start almost one year before – and there was no telling then what the COVID-19 situation would be like this festive season. Chaud Devant and Balzac De L’Iton won Sunday’s major events at the Marsa Racetrack. These were semi-finals from the Prix De Vincennes championship for French trotters registered in class Premier on a long distance of 2640m. A man was remanded in custody on Sunday after pleading not guilty to seriously injuring another motorist and his girlfriend in a punch-up that ensued after a traffic accident.  The court heard how the accident happened early on Saturday morning under the St Julian’s tunnels.  Mahmoud Mustara Mohammed Albadah, a 25-year-old Libyan living in Swieqi, was charged with seriously injuring the couple following the accident in Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli. Moscow has said that a US plane threatened civilian aircraft but "catastrophe" was avoided when a Russian passenger plane dived to avoid the NATO reconnaissance aircraft that crossed its path above the Black Sea. Few people in Malta are interested in attending or paying for arts and cultural events, with the pandemic exacerbating the disinterest, a survey of the sector has shown. Attendances for nearly all forms of cultural and arts events were down compared to 2016, with the highest negative variance relating to cinema and other projected artistic performances (a decline of 28%), followed by art gallery or similar (a decline of 9%). Sixty-nine new COVID-19 patients were diagnosed in the past 24 hours and there are now 19 virus patients in hospital, down from 21 on Saturday. Three are in intensive care.
