Man convicted in arson that led to firefighter's death

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) — A Kentucky man has been convicted of setting a house fire that led to a firefighter's death. The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that a federal jury in Bowling Green convicted 44-year-old Steve Allen Pritchard on Thursday of charges of mail fraud and arson that caused a death. Columbia Fire Department Assistant Chief Charles Sparks had a heart attack while inside a burning house on June 30, 2011. He died eight days later. Sentence cut for Colorado mother who left boy in cold car

BRIGHTON, Colo. (AP) — A Colorado judge reduced the sentence for a woman who left her 2-year-old son in a car overnight during a snowstorm, causing him to suffer hypothermia and frostbite. Adams County District Judge Thomas Ensor on Thursday reduced Nicole Carmon's prison sentence from eight years to five. She was sentenced in January after pleading guilty to negligent child abuse and attempted first-degree assault. Pranksters plant Wyoming city's flower pots with real pot

POWELL, Wyo. (AP) — A Wyoming city has discovered its potted plants have literally gone to pot. Officials in Powell believe pranksters planted marijuana seeds in city-owned flower pots this spring, leading unsuspecting city workers to water and care for them. The Powell Tribune reports city Parks and Recreation staff noticed the unauthorized greenery late last month while watering the pots, including one not far from the police station. Man found guilty in fatal Ohio Amish buggy crash

SIDNEY, Ohio (AP) — A man who struck an Amish buggy from behind, killing a woman and injuring three of her family members, has been found guilty of aggravated vehicular homicide in Ohio. Court records show 43-year-old Steven Hunter pleaded no contest to charges Friday in western Ohio's Shelby County. Shelby County Prosecutor Tim Sell told the Sidney Daily News that Hunter was drunk and high on marijuana when he drove his SUV into the buggy in April. KENLY, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina woman is dead after her motorized wheelchair got stuck while she crossed railroad tracks and she was hit by a freight train. Media organizations say it happened shortly after midnight Friday in Kenly, about 45 miles (72 kilometers) east of Raleigh. Louisiana lawmaker says she's '100 percent cancer free'

KENNER, La. (AP) — A lawmaker in the running for Louisiana's secretary of state post says she's cancer free after her latest procedure. State Rep. Julie Stokes tweeted Friday about a call from her doctor confirming lab results showing no signs of the disease. WBRZ-TV reports Stokes was diagnosed with breast cancer last July.
