WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh returned to Capitol Hill on Wednesday for a whirlwind round of meetings with key Republican senators as Democrats ramped up efforts to block his confirmation. Kavanaugh, the conservative appellate court judge and President Donald Trump's choice to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, was meeting separately with at least five members of the Judiciary Committee. OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — County health inspectors have shut down an Omaha indoor water resort after discovering a myriad of problems. The Omaha World-Herald reports that Coco Key Water Resort will be closed for at least a month following the Douglas County Health Department inspection on Friday. Problems found included loose concrete in the "lazy river" feature, a chemical imbalance in a hot tub, a missing first aid kit and life guard certifications, broken shower heads, sand in the bottom of a pool and malfunctioning water pumps. NEW YORK (AP) — Attorney Michael Avenatti says he is working to reunite two Honduran girls with the parents they were separated from at the U.S. border. The lawyer best known for representing the adult film actress Stormy Daniels held a news conference Wednesday outside a foster care center in New York City that has been looking after the girls. GRETNA, La. (AP) — The wife of a Louisiana sheriff's deputy has been arrested on a second-degree murder charge in his death. News outlets report 35-year-old Shantel Wagner, of Waggaman, is accused of killing Jefferson Parish sheriff's Sgt. Troy Smith, an instructor and hostage negotiator. Wagner called 911 on Father's Day around 11:25 p.m. and reported Smith had tried to commit suicide in the bedroom of their home. (AP) — Florida high school massacre suspect Nikolas Cruz allegedly told a woman months before the shooting that he might attack the school and that he might even kill her — but she never called police. Two men miraculously survived a single-car crash Wednesday that totaled their pickup truck and required authorities to free one man using the Jaws of Life, officials said. The men were were heading northbound on Highway 160 near Rio Vista when they skidded off the road, rolled over and smashed into a tree, according to the Rio Vista Fire Department. “When I saw it, I was sure they were dead,” said Brandon Wilson, a Fire Department captain who responded to the scene. JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Ginny Hacker Eiseman had spent the weekend reeling in a bounty of colorful fish at Steamboat Bay Fishing Club on remote Noyes Island in southeast Alaska. She was returning home to Ketchikan when the unthinkable happened. The chartered Taquan Air flight that she and 10 others were on crashed Tuesday on a rocky mountainside near Ketchikan. LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) — Police in Louisiana say a 12-year-old boy was wounded when a drive-by shooter fired once into a house. Lake Charles Deputy Police Chief Mark Kraus says in a news release that the child was taken to a hospital immediately after the shooting Monday afternoon. He told KPLC-TV that witnesses say a gunman fired once from a passing car. The shooting occurred about 12:40 p.m. The station said the boy's condition was unknown. Its video showed yellow police tape stretching from the door of a brick house.
