Warren Miller, the adventure filmmaker who was one of the first make skiing movies, died at the age of 93 at his home on Orcas Island, Wash., according to a statement issued late Wednesday on his official Facebook page. BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union is starting legal action against five member countries amid concern about their handling of defense contracts and conditions they might be imposing on suppliers. The EU's executive Commission said Thursday that it had sent letters of formal notice to seek clarification from Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Portugal. JUNCTION CITY, Kan. (AP) — Police are asking the FBI to investigate the nearly 40-year-old disappearance of a 13-year-old girl from the bedroom of her Junction City home. The Daily Union in Junction City reports that Beverly Ward was reported missing in the early morning hours of July 4, 1978. Police believe a suspect came in through the bedroom window, cutting the screen and throwing it aside. Ward was wearing a green night gown when she disappeared. FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Detectives in Fort Worth are investigating the death of a 3-year-old boy who was found with a gunshot wound to the head. The Tarrant County medical examiner's office identified the boy as Jonnie Colon, who died Wednesday night at a home northeast of downtown. Police say the boy was found in a bedroom and family members told investigators that he discovered a gun and accidentally shot himself. Authorities say adults and other children were in the home at the time. The investigation into the death was continuing Thursday.

DALLAS (AP) — Southwest Airlines said Thursday that fourth-quarter profit jumped to $1.89 billion as the recent tax law reduced the company's deferred tax liability and should boost 2018 earnings too. The nation's fourth-biggest airline also said that travel bookings so far in 2018 appear solid, and it gave a cautiously upbeat forecast of revenue in the first quarter. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minneapolis man has been convicted in the shooting death of a grandmother struck by bullets intended for a gang member. A Hennepin County jury on Wednesday found 21-year-old Joshua Ezeka guilty of premeditated first-degree murder and four other charges.
