A 15-year-old boy linked to the killing of Nasrat Ahmad Yar, a former Afghan interpreter for the U.S. Special Forces, who was working as a Lyft driver when he was shot and killed last summer in Washington D.C. This news, announced by D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith, marks a major step in a case that has highlighted the dangers faced by people driving for ride-sharing services and the issue of gun violence in the area.
Nasrat Ahmad Yar, who was 31 and a father of four, was found shot dead on 11th Street Northeast just after midnight on July 3, 2023. Before moving to the United States for a safer life for his family, he had worked as an interpreter for the U.S. Army in Afghanistan for two tours.
The police managed to arrest the teenager after working hard on the case for eight months. A video from the night of the murder showed four people, thought to be teenagers, running away from where Ahmad Yar was killed. This video was crucial in finding the suspects.
The video caught the tragic moment Ahmad Yar was surrounded and shot after he had dropped off his passengers. It recorded someone saying, “You just killed him,” which suggests there was some confrontation right before Ahmad Yar was shot.
Assistant Police Chief Leslie Parsons praised the video’s role in the investigation but didn’t say if the arrested teenager was seen in it. The teenager has been charged with murder. Parsons also mentioned that there are more suspects who are still free, and he asked the public to help by providing any information that could lead to more arrests.
This sad event has brought attention to the problem of gun violence in D.C., especially how it affects people like Ahmad Yar, who came to the U.S. looking for a peaceful life after facing many difficulties in Afghanistan. The incident has deeply affected his family and raised concerns about the safety of gig economy workers and the involvement of young people in violent crimes.
The community is grieving for Ahmad Yar, a man who dedicated his life to helping his country and then his new home in the U.S. The arrest sends a strong message against using guns in crimes, but it also shows the need for more action to make sure everyone is safe, especially those coming to the U.S. hoping for a better future.
