Fatah and Hamas signed a reconciliation deal on Thursday, the latest move towards ending a split that has splintered Palestinian leadership for a decade.

Negotiations between the two groups began Tuesday in talks lead by Egypt. This has been considered the most serious effort to date to bring the two factions following a bloody near-civil war in 2007.

Actor James Van Der Beek took to Twitter on Wednesday night to share an account of his experiences with sexual harassment in Hollywood, and express support for the women who have spoken out against the alleged sexual misconduct of Harvey Weinstein.

"What Weinstein is being accused of is criminal. What he's admitted to is unacceptable — in any industry," Van Der Beek wrote. "I applaud everybody speaking out."

Oxford will ban gas-powered cars starting in 2020

LONDON (Reuters) - The university city of Oxford has unveiled plans to ban petrol and diesel cars from its center as part of the most radical set of proposals so far in Britain to curb pollution.

Whilst London is rolling out an "ultra low emission zone", which will see the most gas-guzzling vehicles pay daily charges to enter the city center from 2020, Oxford's "Zero Emission Zone" will ban emitting vehicles from entering part of the city center from that date.

The first two of the big banks reported earnings on Thursday morning, and all of the major banks are rising following the reports.

JPMorgan and Citi posted their third-quarter earnings beats and saw their stocks rise after the results.

First, JPMorgan earned $1.76 per share, well above Wall Street's consensus estimate of $1.65 as revenue from fixed income trading plunged 27% from the same point last year.

Fewer people are seeking unemployment benefits as the impact of a disastrous hurricane season fades

WASHINGTON (AP) — Fewer people sought unemployment benefits last week as the impact of last month's hurricanes on the US economy fades.

The Labor Department says weekly applications for US unemployment aid fell 15,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 243,000. Applications fell in Texas and Florida, where Hurricanes Harvey and Irma inflicted heavy damage in late August and September. Applications spiked to 298,000 after Harvey hit Texas in late August.

Shell is making a big push into electric vehicles

LONDON (AP) — Oil company Shell has signed an agreement to buy electric vehicle charging firm NewMotion. It did not disclose terms.

The company, which will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell, operates more than 30,000 private electric charge points for homes and businesses in the Netherlands, Germany, France and the U.K.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — An American woman, her Canadian husband and their three young children have been released after years of being held captive by a network with ties to the Taliban, U.S. and Pakistani officials said Thursday.

U.S. officials say Pakistan secured the release of Caitlan Coleman of Stewartstown, Pennsylvania, and her husband, Canadian Joshua Boyle, who were abducted five years ago while traveling in Afghanistan and had been held by the Haqqani network in Pakistan.

KABUL (Reuters) - Civilian casualties from Afghan and American air strikes have risen more than 50 percent since last year, the United Nations said on Thursday, as troops increase attacks on militants under a new strategy announced by U.S. President Donald Trump in August.

As of the end of September, at least 205 civilians had been killed and 261 wounded this year in air strikes in Afghanistan, U.N. investigators said in a quarterly report.
