A cannabis-specific venture capital firm that counts Snoop Dogg among its partners is investing in a Toronto-based cannabis tech company.

Snoop Dogg's fund, Casa Verde, led a $2 million seed round in Trellis, a cannabis inventory management firm. Trellis develops software to help dispensaries and other plant-touching businesses comply with regulatory requirements, including seed-to-sale tracking.

Casa Verde makes early-stage investments in cannabis companies that do not touch the plant... Читать дальше...

A look back at the biggest scandals from Rick Pitino's controversial career

BusinessInsider.com

Bob Leverone/AP

The recruiting scandal at the University of Louisville may be the biggest story in college sports right now, but this isn't the first time men's basketball head coach Rick Pitino has been in hot water.

For over four decades, the 1987 NABC Coach of the Year has been one of the most highly regarded coaches in the game, assembling championship-caliber squads in multiple conferences and across multiple eras. But he's also demonstrated a tendency to find himself on the wrong side of the NCAA's investigative arm. Читать дальше...

Here's how your take-home pay could change if Trump's new tax plan is passed

BusinessInsider.com

AP/Michael Conroy

President Donald Trump's tax plan is being billed by the White House and Republicans as a boon for the middle class.

But wealthy Americans, including Trump himself, stand to benefit handsomely from the tax proposal, thanks to provisions eliminating the estate tax and the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT), among others.

Exactly how much individuals save will depend on many factors, and as Business Insider's Josh Barro pointed out, tax cuts for average Americans... Читать дальше...

THE BOTTOM LINE: The secret recipe for new stock records and the market's biggest fears

Business Insider

This week:

  • Business Insider executive editor Sara Silverstein discusses how the stock market has been turned upside down in September. The stocks that were the best year-to-date performers through August have been the worst in September, while those with the weakest returns over the first eight months have led the way higher. A similar complete reversal can also be seen at the sector level, with market-leading tech and healthcare stocks giving way in this month to energy and telecom. Читать дальше...

As we noted in our article last week, we have had strong reasons technically as well as from a macro perspective to be bullish on the ProShares UltraShort 20+ Year Treasury (TBT) since its low just under 33 on September 7.

And the TBT has continued to rise since then. It gapped up Wednesday to $35.50 from Tuesday evening's close at $34.46.

The upward thrust occurred just in advance of the unveiling of the President's Tax Reform Plan (Wednesday at 3 PM ET)... Читать дальше...

At the time of his death, Hefner's net worth was estimated to be in the neighborhood of $45 million, according to Wealth-X.

BusinessInsider.com

Bunnies have been a staple of the Playboy brand since it opened its first nightclub in 1960.

In the beginning, the bunnies were simply young women who worked as waitstaff in Playboy's clubs.

From 1960 to 1986, the brand ran 40 nightclubs, according to Atlas Obscura, as well as some intermittent casinos in England and the Bahamas. Prospective bunnies had to audition in order to get the job.

Since then, the term has expanded somewhat. It's even been applied to Hugh Hefner's girlfriends... Читать дальше...

BusinessInsider.com

Drew Angerer/Getty Images

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Thursday defended President Donald Trump's criticism of NFL players who kneel during the national anthem to protest racial injustice and police brutality.

Sanders said Trump's comments "shouldn't be about the NFL against the president. This should be about our country coming together."

When reporter April Ryan asked her to clarify a point, Sanders disputed her follow-up.

"I don't think there's much to clarify... Читать дальше...

"Our kids will be in therapy," Brene Brown half-jokes. She's a researcher studying shame and vulnerability; her husband is a pediatrician; together, they've got two children.

But even if their kids do wind up on the proverbial couch, Brown will hardly think she's failed as a parent.

On an episode of Lewis Howes' podcast, "The School of Greatness," Brown said there are only two types of kids you can raise: "kids who ask for help when they need it and kids who won't. Читать дальше...

Gary Cohn, the president's top economic adviser, said the "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" to overhaul the US tax code convinced him to remain in his White House position after he considered resigning in the wake of Trump's controversial response to a violent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, last month.

"Why am I here? I am here just for this reason," Cohn said during a White House press briefing on Thursday afternoon. "Think about the opportunity... Читать дальше...

Gary Cohn repeatedly dodges questions on whether the tax plan will help Trump

BusinessInsider.com

Spencer Platt/Getty Images

Gary Cohn, the White House economic adviser and chair of the National Economic Council, repeatedly sidestepped questions Thursday on whether President Donald Trump's recently released tax plan would benefit the president or his businesses.

Numerous elements proposed in the tax plan, such as the repeal of the alternative minimum tax and a lower pass-through business rate, could shrink Trump's tax bill.

"How can you say this is not going to help him?"... Читать дальше...

These are the four key takeaways from Twitter's move to test longer tweets (TWTR)

BusinessInsider.com

BII

Earlier this week, Twitter announced it would begin testing 280-character tweets, a significant increase from its longstanding 140-character limit.

The new limit will be tested out on a small subset of Twitter users and will not include Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages, because it's possible to convey more meaning in fewer characters in these languages.

For example, less than 1% of Japanese tweets hit the 140-character limit, while nearly 10% of English tweets did, according to Twitter. Читать дальше...

BusinessInsider.com

REUTERS/Alvin Baez

Republican Sens. John McCain and Mike Lee introduced legislation Thursday to permanently exempt Puerto Rico from the Jones Act shipping law.

The senators say the Trump administration's decision Thursday to grant a 10-day waiver of the Jones Act for Puerto Rico does not go far enough to help rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Maria and encourage long-term economic growth on the bankrupt island.

"While I welcome the Trump administration's Jones Act waiver for Puerto Rico... Читать дальше...
