The Eagles beat the Redskins thanks to a controversial replay review that surprised players on both sides

BusinessInsider.com

Fox Sports

The Philadelphia Eagles beat the Washington Redskins 30-17 in Week 1 of the NFL season, but the result might have been different if not for a controversial replay review of the Eagles' game-winning fumble return for a touchdown.

With the Redskins trailing by five points with under two minutes to play, they were driving for a potential go-ahead touchdown.

Instead, Cousins was hit as he tried to throw and Fletcher Cox picked up the loose ball and returned it for what would likely be a game-clinching score. Читать дальше...

Jim Mattis just out-Trumped Trump on North Korea

BusinessInsider.com

AP Photo/Pablo Martinez Monsivais

US Defense Secretary James Mattis delivered a pithy response on Sunday to North Korea's nuclear test earlier that day.

This was the core of the statement: "Any threat to the United States or its territories including Guam or our allies will be met with a massive military response, a response both effective and overwhelming."

Global markets barely moved upon opening on Monday, which was consistent with the broader treatment of these words as just more of the same from Washington. Читать дальше...

In 1995 the NFL used some bizarre mascots that were never seen again

BusinessInsider.com

The NFL's Pro Bowl game rarely produces notable moments and is often just a glorified version of a touch football game.

However, a look back at the 1995 Pro Bowl unveiled something interesting. Many teams used new, bizarre mascots, and most of the mascots were never seen again.

The characters were originally introduced as a short-lived NFL merchandising effort called "Team NFL Heroes." You can read more about that project at Uni-Watch, and you can see an example for sale on eBay. Читать дальше...

7 questions about adulthood I've been meaning to ask myself for the last year

BusinessInsider.com

MarinaDa/Shutterstock.com

A few years ago, I came across this passage in a New York Times essay on summer by Tim Kreider:

"And I'll probably still be evading the same truth I'm evading now: that the life I ended up with, much as I complain about it, was pretty much the one I chose. And my dissatisfactions with it are really with my own character, with my hesitation and timidity."

Really makes you think, huh?

I copied it and saved it in an email draft as a reminder to take control over my own life. Читать дальше...

The Texans benched their starting quarterback and turned to a rookie after just 2 quarters, and the crowd loved it

BusinessInsider.com

Eric Christian Smith/AP

The Houston Texans started Tom Savage at quarterback for their first game of the season but didn't stick with him long.

After going down 19-0 in the first half to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first game of the season, Texans head coach Bill O'Brien had seen enough and sat Savage for rookie QB Deshaun Watson.

The Texans took Watson in the first round of the draft this year, immediately beginning speculation about when Watson would take over an uncertain situation at quarterback. Читать дальше...

Walmart will use Nvidia and AI to gain ground on Amazon

BusinessInsider.com

Thomson Reuters

There was a time, not too long ago, when Wal-Mart was the undisputed king of retail. However, e-commerce has changed the landscape, and over the last few years, Amazon.com, Inc. has been taking an increasingly large slice of the retail pie. Wal-Mart has been playing catch-up in online sales, but now it seems the retail giant is ready to take the fight to Amazon, with a little help from NVIDIA Corporation and artificial intelligence (AI).

A tiny portion of the world's oceans could help meet global seafood demand

BusinessInsider.com

foooomio/Flickr

Seafood is an essential staple in the diets of people around the world. Global consumption of fish and shellfish has more than doubled over the last 50 years, and is expected to keep rising with global population growth. Many people assume that most seafood is something that we catch in the wild with lines, trawls and traps. In fact, aquaculture (aquatic farming) accounts for just over half of all the seafood consumed worldwide.

Today aquaculture is the fastest-growing food sector in the world. Читать дальше...

The 33 most daring dresses celebrities have ever worn

Celebrities often push the boundaries of fashion on the red carpet, from wearing dresses designed like a swan's body to outfits made entirely from recycled bottles. The Toronto International Film Festival starts on Thursday, which means it’s time for awards season to begin.

Some of those TIFF titles getting a lot of talk already include the Sundance hit “Call Me By Your Name,” Emma Stone as tennis legend Billy... Читать дальше...

BANK OF AMERICA: Here's how to make a killing from the next tech boom with 'limited risk'

BusinessInsider.com

Patrick Fallon/Reuters

It's been hard to miss the rally in technology stocks this year.

The S&P 500 sector is up about 24% year-to-date, outpacing the broader index's 10% rally.

Even stock pickers, whose funds have suffered outflows to more passive strategies since the end of the recession, are having a strong year thanks to bets on stocks like Facebook and Apple.

But tech's outperformance has also brought sharp drawdowns. Stock investors are expected to brace for these kinds of swings... Читать дальше...

I tried eating, exercising, sleeping, and spending 'perfectly' for a week — and realized I've been approaching my goals all wrong

BusinessInsider.com

If you've ever had a long list of things you want to accomplish, you might be familiar with the feeling that you don't have enough time or energy to do them all.

I'm very familiar with that feeling — I have more on the list than I can often keep track of: I want to eat healthier, exercise more, cook more often, get less takeout, take fewer cabs, not eat the ice cream in the freezer (or at least not replace the ice cream in the freezer once I've eaten it)... I have over $100k in student loans — here's how I bought my dream home with no down payment

BusinessInsider.com

Like many young professionals, 31-year-old Brittany Pitcher thought her dream of homeownership would never quite line up with the reality of her financial outlook.

Pitcher, an attorney in Tacoma, Washington, earns a good salary, but a large chunk of her take-home pay goes toward paying down her debt from law school, not leaving much room to save for her dream home — especially when most experts recommend coming up with at least a 20 percent down payment.

Former US Army officer in South Korea explains what a war with North Korea would look like

BusinessInsider.com

Kim Hong-Ji/Reuters

As a U.S. Army intelligence officer in South Korea, I helped prepare for various war scenarios by testing assumptions and refining war plans.

In a secret underground base, Command Post Tango, the combined headquarters of the U.S.-South Korean command, is abuzz with activity.

North Korean artillery has pummeled sites around Seoul, leaving thousands of South Korean and American civilians and service members dead.

A toxic combination of North Korean provocations... Читать дальше...

The Titans tried an onside kick on the opening play of the season — and it failed miserably

BusinessInsider.com

Ed Zurga/AP

The Tennessee Titans are expected to make a jump into becoming a postseason team this year, but their first play of the year did not go as planned.

To kick things off against the Oakland Raiders, the Titans tried an onside kick — and the Raiders recovered it at the 50-yard line.

From there, the Raiders put together nearly a perfect drive, getting a solid 14-yard carry from a spry-looking Marshawn Lynch, a completion to tight end Jared Cook, then a short pass to Amari Cooper... Читать дальше...

Warner Bros.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — 'It' is a hit.

The Stephen King adaptation from New Line and Warner Bros. has earned a record-breaking $117.2 million from 4,103 locations according to studio estimates on Sunday.

Jennifer Lawrence's new movie is an ambitious look at today's world, but it falls short of delivering

BusinessInsider.com

Paramount

Darren Aronofsky has always been fascinated to delve into religion and the macabre in all his work. And his latest, "mother!" is no exception.

An ambitious project that explores the deepest nightmares about family and the world, like all things Aronofsky, you will leave the movie with more questions than answers. But he wouldn't want it any other way.

In the movie Jennifer Lawrence plays a woman (a name is never given in the movie, in fact, no names are given) who... Читать дальше...
