  • When Trump criticized NFL players for kneeling during the national anthem, he also said football was being ruined by rules that limit head injuries.
  • Science has shown that repeated head injuries can cause permanent harm or death.
  • The bigger question is whether the NFL's efforts to protect players are enough.

President Donald Trump took aim at the NFL at an Alabama campaign rally on Friday, criticizing players for kneeling during the national anthem ... Читать дальше...

BusinessInsider.com

Associated Press

For the first time in its 11-year history, Twitter will lift the 140-character limit for tweets — at least for some people.

The company announced Tuesday that it would begin testing a new limit of 280 characters for all languages except Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. The change will only be seen by a small percentage of Twitter users at first before it's made available broadly.

The move will give Twitter users more freedom to express themselves, easing one... Читать дальше...

Google: Yes, we blew it. But we cannot clean up digital advertising alone

BusinessInsider.com

Google says that ads running alongside dicey YouTube videos was complete miss on our part." But the company says it needs the industry's help to clean up the murky digital ad buying ecosystem. The search giant says it has improved ad viewability on YouTube and is working on giving marketers better tools to keep track of where their ads run across Google's network. From ads ending up next to hate videos on YouTube to having to refund advertisers after showing their ads to bots instead of humans... Читать дальше...

Conservatives are drawing a red line that could doom the GOP's tax reform efforts

BusinessInsider.com

WASHINGTON — Republicans are considerably more optimistic about party unity in reforming the tax code compared to the several failed attempts to repeal and replace Obamacare.

But a battle over the corporate tax rate still looms on the horizon, threatening the GOP's efforts at passing significant legislative achievement this year.

During a forum with conservative lawmakers on Tuesday morning, House Freedom Caucus Chairman and North Carolina Rep. Mark... Читать дальше...

Toys R Us is being crushed by a problem it can't solve

BusinessInsider.com

Reuters

Bankruptcy indicators first started swirling publicly around Toys “R” Us on September 6. Unlike other retailers that have been dogged by bankruptcy rumors for years, such as Sears Holdings, Toys “R” Us threw in the towel only 12 days later, when its suppliers, fearing steep losses, reacted just as the company was trying to build its inventory before the crucial holiday sales period.

It wasn’t bondholders or banks that pulled the ripcord, but trade creditors. The US and Canadian... Читать дальше...

Rich parents are fine with their kids being entitled — as long as they don't act like it

BusinessInsider.com

Graham Denholm/Getty Images for the VRC

Rich parents are just like the rest of us: They don't want to raise spoiled kids.

In "Uneasy Street: The Anxieties of Affluence," sociologist Rachel Sherman interviewed 50 New York City parents with incomes of at least $250,000 a year.

Largely, she found, they struggled with feeling and being "worthy" of their wealth, knowing that they inhabit incredible privilege, but wanting to distance themselves from the consumerist, morally bankrupt... Читать дальше...

Woman drivers could provide a boost to the Saudi Arabia auto market

BusinessInsider.com

Thomson Reuters

Saudi Arabia has lifted a ban on women driving, and the move could give a boost to an auto market in the country that's been declining.

After years of trending up and pushing toward 1 million in annual sales, 2016 saw the Saudi market swoon, plunging by almost 30%.

The key factor has been the lower price of oil globally, which has spurred a sales boom in places like the SUV-loving US but curtailed spending in Saudi Arabia.

Women behind the wheel in the kingdom could moderate the decline... Читать дальше...

People in Puerto Rico describe devastation after 6 days without basic resources: 'People on the outside know more than we do'

BusinessInsider.com

Reuters/Carlos Garcia Rawlins

The devastation in Puerto Rico is visible everywhere. It can be seen in hospitals, where life-saving medications are at risk of spoiling; at gas stations, where lines of cars stretch as far as the eye can see; and outside banks, where people rise before the sun to try their chances at an ATM.

But hope is visible in the US territory too. It's evident on roads, where parents drive hours to get reception to call their children; in houses, where neighbors share food and water; and outside cafes... Читать дальше...

We tried kava — the national drink of Fiji that gets people high

BusinessInsider.com

A trip to Fiji isn't complete without some kava, the country's national drink. Known in Fijian as yaqona, or by its colonial nickname "grog," kava is a muddy, earthy beverage that calms you and numbs your mouth and throat. And if you drink enough, you'll feel a mild euphoric buzz. It's made from the powdered root of a pepper tree called piper methysticum strained through a wooden bowl full of water.

Now, can we try to fix the problem that could actually bring down the US healthcare system?

BusinessInsider.com

Reuters

  • American policymakers need to stop obsessing over Obamacare and tackle the problem that could really bring down the whole healthcare system — exorbitant prices for drugs and care.
  • The US pays far more than the rest of the world for healthcare, and the pharmaceutical industry is misleading us about the reasons why.
  • There has yet to be a serious push to tackle the reasons for that.

The GOP has yet again failed to repeal Obamacare, and will likely... Читать дальше...

Why so many spam phone calls come from your area code

BusinessInsider.com

Skye Gould/Tech Insider

The unfortunate reality about spam calls — a common practice among criminals and unsavory marketers — is that it still works, given how so many people still fall victim these days.

After all, when you see an incoming phone call from a number you don't know, but has the same area code as you, it's understandable why you would drop your guard and pick up the phone.

Spam callers can make it seem like they're calling from your hometown's area code with a tactic called caller ID "spoofing." Indeed... Читать дальше...

The day was once again driven by news out of Washington, as details of the GOP's tax plan trickled out and the latest Obamacare repeal effort fell through.

Trump addresses criticism over Puerto Rico disaster response: 'It's out in the ocean — you can't just drive your trucks there'

BusinessInsider.com

Joshua Roberts/Reuters

President Donald Trump on Tuesday addressed criticism that he had not paid the proper amount of attention to the ongoing crisis in Puerto Rico, saying it was a much more difficult situation to handle than one in Florida or Texas because it was "in the ocean."

"It's the most difficult job because it's on the island, it's on an island in the middle of the ocean," Trump said at a joint press conference with Spain's prime minister, Mariano Rajoy. "It's out in the ocean ... Читать дальше...

BusinessInsider.com

The formal end of the fight against ISIS in Mosul in July was heralded as a triumph, wresting Iraq's second-biggest city away from the terrorist group after nine months of intense and destructive fighting.

But ISIS has held on to pockets of territory in Iraq.

On August 19, Iraqi forces launched an assault on ISIS in Tal Afar, a town west of Mosul. By the end of the month, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi was again declaring victory.

While the town of Tal Afar is much smaller than Mosul... Читать дальше...
