Chase Daniel, Bears backups give Chiefs starters fits 27-20

Times Union

CHICAGO (AP) — Bears coach Matt Nagy decided to rest starters for the next-to-last preseason game rather than use it as the customary regular-season tuneup. And the backups proved that they're also ready for the regular season. Backup quarterback Chase Daniel directed touchdown drives on the first three possessions and the Bears defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 27-20 on Saturday. The Bears (2-2) played in the Hall of Fame Game and have been practicing since July 20, and Nagy liked what he'd seen from the starters in practices. Читать дальше...

Times Union

SEKIU, Wash. (AP) — A 31-foot (9.5-meter) humpback whale struck and killed by a ship is being turned into a feast by the Makah Indian Tribe. The tiny tribe with a reservation on the northwestern tip of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state has been butchering the whale that was pulled ashore Thursday. "It is sacred," Nathan Tyler, chairman of the Makah Indian Tribe, told The Seattle Times . "We have deep regrets about the whale being struck by a ship and dying, but it will live on, through our... As EPL resists VAR, Man City wrongly concedes goal in draw

Times Union

LONDON (AP) — After failing to convince Premier League rivals of the need for VAR, Manchester City has contributed more evidence why the technology is needed. It came at the cost of dropping two points early in its title defense. The champions fell behind at Wolverhampton on Saturday when Willy Boly used his arm to divert the ball into the net when attempting to meet Joao Moutinho's cross with a header. That was clear from the replays but England is the only major European league that has yet to... Читать дальше...

7 arrested in protest over torn-down Confederate statue

Times Union

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Officials say seven people have been arrested at a rally calling for a century-old Confederate statue at the University of North Carolina to be returned after it was yanked down five days ago. About a dozen people carrying Confederate flags were met Saturday by dozens of protesters that don't want the memorial nicknamed "Silent Sam" to return. Television footage and videos posted to social media showed several punches thrown and at least one man handcuffed after he tried... Читать дальше...

'Sister Wives' family makes home in inclusive Arizona city

Times Union

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — The patriarch of the polygamous family from TV's "Sister Wives" drove around his new hometown in northern Arizona, admiring the mountain views but still thinking about the heap of boxes that needed sorting at the homes he rented for his four wives and 18 children. "We moved to heaven, but we're in living hell right now," Kody Brown said, laughing, during a recent phone interview with The Associated Press. Packing up four moving trucks in Las Vegas during triple-digit July heat and taking his family to Flagstaff... Читать дальше...

No love for ankle monitors on captured immigrants

Times Union

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Federal authorities' shift away from separating immigrant families caught in the U.S. illegally now means that many parents and children are quickly released, only to be fitted with electronic monitoring devices — a practice which both the government and advocacy groups oppose for different reasons. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is issuing thousands of 5.5-ounce (155-gram) ankle monitors that immigrants call grilletes, or electronic shackles, spelling big profits for GEO Group... He is hopeful the rescuers will be able to get them as the weather improves. Otherwise, firefighters... Читать дальше...

Winds die down but rain is still a threat to Hawaii

Times Union

HONOLULU (AP) — Strong winds have died down but officials warned Saturday that torrential rains still remained a big threat to Hawaii after once-powerful Hurricane Lane was downgraded to a tropical storm. Forecasters said as much as 10 more inches (25 centimeters) of rain could fall on Oahu and Maui as the storm churned about 110 miles (177 kilometers) south of Honolulu, moving north at 3 mph (5 kph). 'Private' mess: Musk's credibility goes from bad to worse

Times Union

DETROIT (AP) — First it was the shocking tweet that funding was secured and Tesla may go private, then a statement that the money wasn't locked down after all. Two weeks later it's never mind, the whole deal is off. Welcome to the disarray of Elon Musk, the impulsive genius and architect of cutting-edge car, rocket and solar panel companies built nearly from scratch. Chaos, though, comes with a price. Experts say it all could wind up with Tesla exposed to a fine for misleading investors. And even though Musk has almost legendary status... Читать дальше...

Florida governor hopefuls making Trump a November issue

Times Union

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump inserted himself into the middle of the Florida governor's race by picking sides in the Republican primary, giving a boost to U.S. Rep. DeSantis and handing Democrats a strategy against him in November if he wins Tuesday's primary. Former Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine barely mentioned the president while campaigning until a few weeks ago. Now he is widely airing a television ad that juxtaposes boxing scenes and sounds with images of Trump and DeSantis... Читать дальше...

Times Union

HONOLULU (AP) — The Latest on Tropical Storm Lane (all times local): 7:45 a.m. Forecasters say winds have died down but rain remains a threat on some Hawaiian Islands as tropical storm Lane churns in the central Pacific. National Weather Service meteorologist Vanessa Almanza said as much as 10 inches of rain could fall Saturday as the storm remains about 110 miles south of Honolulu and moves north at 3 mph. Lane is expected to turn west later in the day, which would lessen the threat to the islands. Читать дальше...

Keeping families together without going broke

Times Union

Little has changed in the two years since Congress prodded airlines to seat children 13 and younger next to an adult family member at no extra cost. The reason: The Trump administration has declined to draft new rules detailing how airlines should apply the new law. That means that kids, in some cases, are still being separated from their parents while other families are paying more — in advance — to guarantee seats together. Consumer advocates have lobbied Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao to start writing regulations to no avail. Читать дальше...

Social justice movement veterans help Poor People's Campaign

Times Union

CARTHAGE, N.C. (AP) — As the Poor People's Campaign launches a new initiative, its charismatic leader is working with the generation of civil rights leaders who stood by the Rev. Martin Luther King's side and continued his efforts to stamp out poverty and racism after his assassination. "The movement for love and justice and truth is always a continuation. It's never completed," said the Rev. William Barber, co-chair of the Poor People's Campaign. "And you never approach any movement for justice... Читать дальше...

'One of those weeks': Woods doing well except with putter

Times Union

PARAMUS, N.J. (AP) — Tiger Woods has shown he can put together a series of sub-par rounds. Contending in consecutive tournaments has been more difficult. Woods took small consolation Saturday after his first bogey-free round of the year, mainly because he managed only three birdies at The Northern Trust on a soft Ridgewood Country Club that is yielding plenty of them. He made a 6-foot birdie putt on his last hole — no sure thing the way his week has been going — for a 3-under 68. That gives him seven birdies for 54 holes. Читать дальше...

Lethal injection or gas? Alabama's death row gets to choose

Times Union

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Some say inhaling nitrogen gas would be like dying on a plane that depressurizes in flight, swiftly killing all aboard. Now more than a quarter of Alabama's death row inmates have signed statements saying they would prefer that gas over lethal injection or the electric chair when facing execution. No inmate in the U.S. has been put to death with nitrogen gas before, and critics suspect at least some inmates are simply hoping to delay a date with the death chamber through the inevitable legal challenges ahead. 'Crazy Rich Asians' draws immigrant parents to the movies

Times Union

When "Crazy Rich Asians" surpassed expectations and grabbed the top spot at the box office in its opening weekend, the film also pulled off another surprising feat: It put Asians of a certain age in theater seats. Younger Asian-Americans have been flocking with their parents to see the first movie in 25 years with an all-Asian cast. For many older, first-generation Asian immigrants, going to the movies doesn't rank high under hobbies and interests. The crowds, the language barrier and the seemingly... Читать дальше...

Browns' Josh Gordon cleared by NFL for practices, games

Times Union

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — The NFL has cleared Josh Gordon's route to the field. Gordon, whose career has been derailed by drug and alcohol addictions, "can return to all activities, including games," league spokesman Brian McCarthy said Saturday. Gordon is not expected to participate in any drills for a few days, but could be practicing early next week. Coach Hue Jackson hopes the 27-year-old receiver can play in this week's exhibition finale against Detroit and possibly in the Sept. 9 opener against Pittsburgh. Читать дальше...

Ohio State opener nears, but the talk is not about football

Times Union

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A week before Ohio State's season opener, few in Columbus have been able to focus on football. Not many are talking about the new starting quarterback or how to best use the two elite running backs. Instead, the discussion has been about domestic violence, misplaced loyalty, lying and how much a football coach at a major university is expected to know about the personal lives of his assistants. It has been a preseason unlike any other in Columbus. On Aug. 1, two days before practice opened... Читать дальше...
