Retailers, airlines lift US stocks higher, extending gains

Times Union

Retailers and airlines helped lift U.S. stocks broadly higher Monday, extending the market's gains from last week. Consumer-focused companies and industrial stocks grabbed most of the gains. Banks and health care stocks also rose. Energy companies climbed along with the price of U.S. crude oil. Technology companies lagged the broader market, weighing down the Nasdaq composite index for much of the day. The market's latest gains, while modest, added to what has been a mostly solid summer for stocks. Читать дальше...

Puerto Rico team that endured hurricane makes LLWS run

Times Union

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — After a five-inning, 14 strikeout, no-hit performance, Roberto Joubert stepped off the mound and made his way toward the Puerto Rico dugout. An emphatic roar filled Volunteer Stadium, as miniature Puerto Rican flags waved in tandem with fatheads of each player. The Puerto Rico faithful consisted of no more than 60 or 70 people, yet their passion could be felt throughout the 3,000-seat ballpark. At the front of the crowd was Pedro Ortiz, whose son Devin is a reserve outfielder. Читать дальше...

Catholics consider withholding donations amid abuse scandals

Times Union

For decades, Michael Drweiga has opened his wallet whenever the donation basket comes around at church, but the latest revelations of priests sexually abusing children brought him to the conclusion that he can no longer justify giving. Brice Sokolowski helps small Catholic nonprofits and churches raise money, but he too supports the recent calls to withhold donations. And Georgene Sorensen has felt enough anger and "just total sadness" over the past few weeks that she's reconsidering her weekly offering at her parish. Читать дальше...

Frustration rules as Venezuela unveils new currency

Times Union

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Saul Jimenez just wanted to buy bread from his neighborhood bakery in Venezuela's capital on Monday. It did not go well. Banks and most other businesses were closed for the day as Venezuela launched a series of dramatic economic reforms, beginning with the release of currency with five fewer zeros in a bid to tame soaring inflation. Rampant inflation means it would take a fistful of bills to pay for a loaf of bread, so many Venezuelans like Jimenez rely on bank cards. But... Читать дальше...

Column: Wickens wreck a reminder racing will never be safe

Times Union

Race car drivers understand death, more so than other professional athletes. Nearly every driver at the top levels has lost a friend or a rival in a race, an acquaintance from another series, a driver they grew up idolizing. Death is a risk the drivers willingly take and their loved ones accept, knowing the passion for a profession that can kill. Robert Wickens came to terms with the stakes long before he left a successful career in Europe racing touring cars to join the IndyCar Series. Was he thinking... Читать дальше...

Times Union

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (AP) — Race drivers and others have been answering the call from an 11-year-old Iowa boy who wants racing stickers to cover his casket after he dies from leukemia. Judge weighs suit challenging arrests of married immigrants

Times Union

BOSTON (AP) — A federal judge in Boston is considering whether to allow certain immigrants who are married to U.S. citizens but are facing deportation to remain in the country. Judge Mark Wolf heard arguments Monday morning in a class action lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts. The hearing is expected to continue to Tuesday. The federal government argues the case should be dismissed because U.S. District Court has no jurisdiction over deportation decisions. But... Читать дальше...

Times Union

NEW YORK (AP) — As a kid, Jessica Biel practiced giving a speech in front of a mirror for that fairytale moment when she won a top award. Biel's moment has a chance to come true; she's nominated for an Emmy Award for best lead actress in a limited series for her role in "The Sinner," the USA Network series that she stars in and helped bring about as its executive producer. Now that the moment is closer — the Emmy Awards will be presented next month — she's worried that she might get a little tongue-tied. Читать дальше...

Ben Carson's politics complicate his legacy

Times Union

BALTIMORE (AP) — The portrait used to hang in the hallway, welcoming children and parents to the Archbishop Borders School in Baltimore: A smiling Dr. Ben Carson in surgical scrubs, rubbing together the careful, steady hands that helped him become the nation's most famous black doctor. "The person who has the most to do with your success is you," it reads. Review: In Sandie Jones' novel, a mom is lurking monster

Times Union

"The Other Woman" (Minotaur), by Sandie Jones The other woman in the title of Sandie Jones' thriller isn't an ex-girlfriend, a new affair or an obsessive stalker — though heroine Emily Havistock might welcome any of those rivals for the affections of Adam Banks. Instead, the conniving woman who wants to keep Adam all to herself is the one person Emily has no chance against — his mother, Pammie. A seemingly meek, physically weak and thoughtful mother, Pammie is a monster in disguise, who will do anything... Читать дальше...

Despite the findings, Espresso wrote that "neither the ministry, nor the highway company, ever considered it necessary to limit traffic, divert heavy trucks, reduce the roadway from two to one lanes or reduce the speed"...
